Recently, I transferred from a small college to a big university. This was different for me because at my old school NO ONE wore pajamas. NO. ONE.
Now, I get on the shuttle bus and find someone who just rolled out of bed. Then I get to class to find yet another person wearing pajama pants.
Sure, pajama pants are super duper comfy. Heck, I wear pajamas if I don't leave the house and then change into new pajamas after a shower. It's my absolute favorite thing to wear.
Being comfy doesn't outweigh the way you present yourself.
I understand that I go to an 8 am class when I am on campus, and everyone loves to sleep. But if I can get up at 5 am to get dressed and do something to my hair then leave before 6 to get to class on time, you can get out of bed before 7:40 am to get dressed, at the least.
I'm not saying to "dress up" because that isn't the point. Shorts and a t-shirt are fine. Even sweat pants would be better than pajama pants. It's just showing how you take care of yourself and care enough to wear something you got dressed into that day.
The point is that you want others to know you care about yourself enough to present yourself like this:
"I have my act together, and I want to present myself in a respectful manner."
Or you can present yourself like this:
"I just rolled out of bed, and I could care less about the way I look."
The point is to present yourself in a manner that reflects who you are on the inside, and I know there are many college kids out there who are trustworthy, kind, respectful people.
What character are you showing when you wear pajamas to class?
"I'm lazy." I decided not to do laundry or grab something random in my drawer.
"I procrastinated so much that I didn't sleep much last night." OK, I get this one, but you can still get up at least five minutes earlier to get into some clothes.
"I don't care about your class or plan to sleep in your class." This is just disrespectful. You might of as well just skipped.
What character are you showing when you wear actual clothes to class?
"I am willing to put forth the effort to do well in this class for my career."
"I care about this class, others around me, my professor and my career."
"I am trying." Trying is all that is asked of you.
Who you become now is who you will be in the future. Just please wear proper clothes to class now. You'll thank me later.
