I always hear people say "I miss the good old days," or I hear it in songs on the radio and it got me thinking. When most people say, "I miss the old days," they sometimes mean when life wasn't so complicated and messy. When they did not have a bunch of bills to pay or when school wasn't so difficult, but I tend to disagree.
As much I love to admire the past and how easy life was especially when I was in elementary school, I love looking towards the future even more. To vision what life is going to be like for me really excites me and that's what keeps me going everyday.
Trying to find that perfect job, perfect marriage or even that perfect home inspires me to keep moving forward in life. Knowing that there are so many opportunities to grow and learn in this world can be such a positive thing. I have noticed that bringing up the past can open up certain memories, good or bad, but there is a reason why it is in the past. I always seem to have one of the most popular Disney quotes from the Lion King in the back of my mind that says, “the past can hurt. But the way I see it you can either run from it or learn from it.”
Yes, it can be very scary knowing that everyday a decision you make is what will determine your future, however, that should be more motivation to forget about the past and to look forward. Though, to be honest, I do have a bad habit of dwelling on the "what-ifs" and the "should haves." Realizing that I was not expecting my life to turn out the way it has can cause a bit anxiety for me.
From dealing with a parent's divorce, family members passing away unexpectedly, to living on my own in a town that I am not familiar with is not only tough to deal with but makes me curious on how the future is going to unfold. I like to take on life with a new perspective of focusing on what will make me happy about the future. Whether it is looking towards the day you get married or something simple as being able to sleep in the next day, each little thing counts.
For me, knowing that I was able to live through some dark times in the past makes me believe that the future looks promising. Do not focus too much on dark times though, because life will tend to pass you by. So get excited, because the future is coming whether you are prepared for it or not!
The future. In my eyes, people seem so scared by these words like it will physically hurt them. The future may sound scary, but it does not have to be if you do not let it. So I don’t know why we say, “I miss the good old days,” when you should be looking forward to the future instead of dwelling on the past.
