Yes, I am 21. Yes, I am engaged. Yes, I know, we're young.
Don't think that I can't see you smirk when you hear that my fiance and I plan on getting married this year. I see it, and I'm used to it. I've been told that I'm throwing away my best years, I've been told that I will likely get a divorce, I've been told that we aren't ready, and I've been told we will regret it.
But I don't believe any of that.
I can't even begin to explain to you how happy I am that I will get to spend the best years of my life with my best friend, and grow up with him. I'm still going to travel, and go out, and have fun, but at the end of the day, I get to curl up next to the person I love and trust more than anyone else, and sleep next to him. Yeah, maybe I won't get the fun, single, 21 year old experience of going to bars with friends and flirting to get free drinks, but I would gladly trade that to make breakfast with Preston at our apartment on a rainy Sunday morning.
I know the statistics about young marriage, and I even personally know several couples who got married when they were young and it didn't end well. I know that this isn't going to be all fun and sunshine and roses, it's going to also be financial stress, and arguments, and hard times. I'm not going into this blindly, or naively. But telling me that I'm making a mistake, or that we won't last, is not going to help. It's not your decision, it's ours. And I believe that we will make it.
Besides, if you find the person that you know you want to spend the rest of your life with, why wait?
