"Happy one month baby! I love you! Thank you for putting up with me!"
Thank you for putting up with me? Well, if your boyfriend or girlfriend is just putting up with you then you should break up now.
First off, whether it is a relationship or a friendship, you are not together because you feel like putting up with someone. You care about each other. You have common interests. You want to be there for someone through thick and thin and you want the same from them.
So stop thanking them for putting up with you and start thanking them for caring for you, listening to you, and for allowing you to do the same.
Now, if this relationship is just putting up with one another then how is it supposed to be healthy and last?
Do you think the sweet elderly couples have been together for 50+ years because they wanted to "put up with" one another for that long?
No! They love each other so much that they wanted to spend their lives together. So if you are degrading your relationship to putting up with each other then it will not last.
Not only are you degrading your relationship, but you are degrading your worth. To me, the most important relationship anyone can have is a relationship with Jesus.
I never thank Him for putting up with me. I thank Him for loving me unconditionally. If I go to Christ and thank him for putting up with me, not only am I degrading the love of Christ, but I am making myself worthless.
If I thank Him for loving me unconditionally, then that gives all the power to God because I don't deserve to be loved like this, but I am. I am worthy of His love and He died for me.
So yeah, your boyfriend or girlfriend is there for you when you need them, they make you laugh, they deal with your craziness, and they buy you things.
They take the time to get to know you on your most vulnerable level and they put you before themselves. It is a lot more than putting up with one another.
Our generation needs to stop degrading the importance of relationships.
