I would just like to start off this article by stating that I am a huge fan of television. There are certain TV shows that I consider staples of my childhood. I grew up with the characters, I watched them live their fictional lives and said goodbye to them when the time came. That's how it happened, and I was fine with it. Now, it seems that more of these television shows are being resurrected, and if I'm being honest, I'm not a huge fan. I understand that I don't necessarily fit the demographic for some of these shows, but our generation is protective over them. I'm talking about two specifically: "Fuller House," and "Girl Meets World."
"Full(er) House"
This is a show that my friends and I were obsessed with to the point that I can name the plot to most episodes. My best friend wouldn't let me call her on the phone until after 4:30 p.m. when "Full House" was over. This show ended somewhat abruptly, and when I heard that it was getting a reboot, I was ecstatic. Then, however, I actually started looking into it and finding the similarities between the two.
They are in the same house with very minor changes. From the couch to the pictures on the island and fridge, down to the conversion of the basement into a living area, it's pretty similar. The characters are, as well. There is the single parent (swapping out Danny for DJ), who needs help raising their three kids, (swapping DJ, Steph and Michelle for Jackson, Max and Tommy). Then the single parent's best friend and sibling move in to help out the best that they can (swapping Uncle Jesse and Joey for Aunt Steph and Kimmy). You see what I'm getting at?
Now with that being said, I sat down and watched all of the first season in, at most, three days. At first, I was cringing. I thought that they tried too hard to keep the original series alive through inside jokes and bringing in older characters and reusing the old plots/jokes from "Full House." But all those things aside, it was OK. Personally, I didn't think it did the original show justice. Am I a fan? No. Am I going to keep watching it? You bet.
"Girl Meets World"
OK, I get it. It's on Disney. It's not meant for 20-year-old college kids. One of the issues that I have with it is very close to my issues with "Fuller House." We've seen it all before. From the quirky main character (Cory/Riley), to their mischievous best friend (Shawn/Maya) and even to the lovable dork in school (Minkus/Farkle), we've seen all this before. This show was created for a certain demographic. It is filled with tween humor and deep thoughts about what it means to be yourself and life advice from an "all-knowing" teacher who lives exceptionally close to the main characters (Mr. Feeny/Mr. Cory Matthews). But it was created because of a completely different demographic. It was created because of us—the college kids and young adults. As a Disney Channel show, it's great, and I'm sure it will be a new generation's "That's So Raven" or "Lizzie McGuire." As a show for the die-hard "Boy Meets World" fan, it falls flat as a pancake.
" Gilmore Girls"
Now, there is another beloved show coming back with a reboot. I have such high hopes for this revival but low expectations. We don't know much about it yet but we know that some of our favorite characters are returning to Star's Hollow: Lorelai, Rory, Emily Gilmore, Luke, Kirk, Lane, Logan, Sookie, Paris, Michel, Doyle (Paris' ex), Chris (Rory's dad), Amy (Luke's daughter), Jess, Jackson (Sookie's husband) and Dean. Plus, even more quirky characters we've missed. This seems positive. I'm good so far. We're finally going to figure out what those four little words were! (Rejoice!) Now there's only four episodes scheduled and each one will be named after a season. I'm thinking positively that if this goes over well, there will be more ordered but until then, here's to hoping for the best!
