America is known as "the land of the free and the home of the brave." This phrase can be found in our national anthem. It means that America is for the free people and those who are courageous enough to fight for it.
It seems though this phrase has become lost in translation. A once fairly broad phrase suddenly has turned into a statement meaning America is only for those who are American.
But what makes someone an American?
According to our government, an American is a person who was born in America or has American parents but was born abroad.
Now, there is another way to become a citizen, but it involves going through America's immigration system. This system has been granting people the privilege of being called an American for ages.
Donald Trump, our current president, has decided he doesn't like the number of immigrants in our country. His plan is the "Put America First" plan, which means fewer immigrants and banning people from certain countries from coming into ours.
He seems to believe the people of these countries are dangerous, even though he left out several supposedly "dangerous" countries because he has business ties there.
Now, he wants to build a wall, an actual wall. To be honest, I think we have enough walls in this country, literally and figuratively.
America used to be the melting pot, but now it's chicken noodle soup and now the Trump administration is picking out all the vegetables they don't like. Soon all we will be left with is white chicken. And plain white chicken is boring.
All he cares about are his supporters and the people funding him. If he would just listen to everyone and not just the people in his party, maybe he really could make America great again.
President Trump seems to believe America is only for Americans. If he were to answer my question of what makes an American? I bet his answer would be a person born in this country.
Maybe it's time that question and answer changed. The real question is what should make an American?
