Why We Need To Stop Letting Numbers Control Our Brain

There's more to our lives than just numbers.

Numbers. Something that we see every single day. The infinite term that we let run our lives every single day. But why? Why do we let this inanimate thought of numbers run our everyday lives?

For example, GPA, the saying of "pain is temporary, GPA is forever," which shouldn't be true. If you live by that, you are letting your thoughts about grades run your life. GPA is not forever. By the time you're 30 years old, I promise you, your high school, even college GPA won't even be memorable. I'm not saying this is a reason to completely disregard your studies, but don't let the grades be the reason you miss out on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

This is over stated and overdone, but your weight, the number that you see on the scale, is not a definition of yourself. Your personality is who you are. Your smile is who you are. Your attitude is who you are. Your family, your ancestry, your DNA is who you are, not your weight. Weight is a number, not a life sentence.

There's a great saying that goes, "If you didn't know how old you were, what age would you act." As an undergraduate college student, personally I know that we are constantly wishing to be another age, whether it's wanting to be in high school again, or to be out of college. For our entire lives, we've been wishing we were any age but our own. At 10, we wanted to be 13 to be a teenager. At 13, we wanted to be 16 to get a car, to be able to drive. At 16, we wanted to be 17, to get into R-rated movie. At 17, we wanted to be an "official" adult, 18 years old. And at 18, we want to be 20, to no longer be a teenager. And at 20, we want that one more year to drink "legally". Finally, when we're almost 30, we wish we were 10 again. We constantly wish for something we aren't or can't have. Unfortunately, time never stops and everyone ages. It's life, there's no stopping it and certainly no reason to let it stop you from living your life.

Money. Money is the biggest motivation in the economic world. We consistently worry about the quantity of money that we obtain. Worrying how much we have to pay for food, drinks, clothing, rent, car payments etc. You need to worry about necessities, especially if you're the supporter. Take a second to breathe. The number on the price tag isn't you, it's not your heart, soul and/or brain.

Time. "Early is on time, on time is late, and late is no good." Something, personally, that my parents embedded into my brain. But people are too often worried about how much time is left, how much time until. Just enjoy the present, enjoy the "now". I know it sounds like some guru talk, but it's true. Live in the now.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
