I'm 20 Years Old And I'm Tired Of Getting Grabbed By Men Twice My Age

Going out should be fun, not terrifying.

Honestly, I don't care how old you are, y'all need to stop.

Imagine this: it's Thursday night which means you're out with the girls dancing and singing to every song that comes on. One of your best friends is leading you on to the dancefloor to dance to y'all's song and before you even realize what's happening, you feel your whole body jerk around as your arm is ripped backward behind you.

There stands a 40-year-old man looking down at you, your wrist tightly gripped in his hand and twisted to the side, and he says to you, "I have this dance."

Your initial reaction may be to go ahead and give him what he wants, talk your way out of it, or even throw a punch. But who are you kidding? He would put you on the floor with one hit. So that option is out. You're now 8 seconds into this interaction and your body is tense. The music you were so eager to dance to is now drowned out by a silent scream in your head and you want nothing more than to run away.

Odds are, you know this situation all too well. You probably weren't even drunk, or drinking at all for that matter, but you were scared. You were terrified that your twig of an arm was about to snap in half under his grip. The only thing you could think to do is say "next song!" in hopes that he would let go.

When he finally did, you went back to dancing with your friend and gave her the details of what happened. As the song came to an end, you made a run for it.

You did everything in your power to avoid the man, which at some point, included hiding in the bathroom in hopes that his monkey brain would jump to something else and forget that he was after you to begin with. Your friend stands between you and the person who had you on high alert no matter where you walked for the rest of the night. Sitting at the table she said "he's looking around" and hid you behind her. Not even the friends around you brought you comfort at that point.

No person should have to deliberately go out of their way to avoid a person they've never even met.

No person should be manhandled by absolutely ANYBODY. Ever. Point blank.

No person should be told what is going to happen and how things are going to go.

It's 2018, do we need to send you a letter in the mail for you to understand what the rest of society is doing nowadays? Obviously you've been missing some memos. We can even have it sent by carrier pigeons if that's what needs to happen for y'all to understand what is, and is not, okay.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
