College is an exciting time. Remaining healthy and active can prove to be a challenge with such a hectic lifestyle. Between classes, extracurricular activities and social events, it can be hard to keep health a priority. Although there are many factors against us, following these simple tips can eliminate the fears of the freshman 15.

1. Water!!

It can be so easy to drink little to no water on your busy days. Treat yourself to a new water filter pitcher to leave in your fridge or a cute water bottle that will hold you accountable to drink (and rep your school at the same time with a fun decal). No excuses!

2. Healthy Options

You can eat in the cafeteria and not feel awful afterwards. I know it's hard to resist the pizza and pasta bar, but usually the vegetarian and lighter options are just as good-don't write them off!

3. Steamers

Steamers are an easy and healthy way to prepare food and even meal prep in your own dorm room. All you need is to pick out a protein and a veggie to cook. Steamers usually have many settings, so you can set it to cook for an hour and study without doing hardly any work!

4. Take Advantage of Required Meal Plans

Some schools allow for you to take a to-go box of food back to your room when you go to the cafeteria. If you always find yourself with extra meals at the end of the week, make sure you are maximizing your money and make an extra trip to take fresh fruit and vegetables to go. This way you don't buy too much produce at the beginning of the week and they aren't going to waste.

5. Limit Eating Out

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F10%2F13%2F636119924621626042968810728_chipotle.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=289&h=44492479bd752fbeca8314174bf0b74882864e6aa2ef7481cfa39b472798d170&size=980x&c=2582173527 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F10%252F13%252F636119924621626042968810728_chipotle.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D289%26h%3D44492479bd752fbeca8314174bf0b74882864e6aa2ef7481cfa39b472798d170%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2582173527%22%7D" expand=1]

I know we all love Chipotle (who wouldn't), but eating out too much can be a strain on both your body and your wallet. Try to limit eating out to 3 times a week or less to save money and unnecessary calories!

6. Take Advantage of Student Discounts

Many gyms and specialty exercise companies give student discounts for their services. You would be surprised how much you can save! Do your research and ask for your discount, it may be a good outlet from the stress of school.

7. Purchase Hand Weights

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F10%2F13%2F636119925882247066-1527811834_weights.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=345&h=32ea33898e0577178de461f76e059c2d1a02651b8287ccc9329377fbaa994f83&size=980x&c=2711959170 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F10%252F13%252F636119925882247066-1527811834_weights.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D345%26h%3D32ea33898e0577178de461f76e059c2d1a02651b8287ccc9329377fbaa994f83%26size%3D980x%26c%3D2711959170%22%7D" expand=1]

Sometimes you just don't feel like leaving your room but can't stop watching Netflix-we've all been there. To make it easier for yourself, buy 3-5 pound weights for your dorm room. They take up little to no space and you can do a multitude of work outs for toning, even in small spaces.

8. Limit Late Night Snacks

This is one of the hardest rules, but nothing good happens can come from eating junk food when you're pulling that all nighter. If you have to eat to stay up, make sure you eat a light, healthy snack that has nutrients instead of reaching for the chocolate chips.

9. Walk the Long Way to Class

Walking is good for you!

10. Set goals.

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F10%2F13%2F636119930272168785-1789443819_lets%2520do%2520it.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=210&h=bbb2947b139eece811dd9330f8e87cbcf1a9b01a4344c609828c044f75e72972&size=980x&c=968370291 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F10%252F13%252F636119930272168785-1789443819_lets%252520do%252520it.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D210%26h%3Dbbb2947b139eece811dd9330f8e87cbcf1a9b01a4344c609828c044f75e72972%26size%3D980x%26c%3D968370291%22%7D" expand=1]

Do not get so caught up in classes that you forget to set realistic and positive goals for your own physical and mental health. Maybe you challenge yourself to a yoga class a week, or to drink more water than you did the week before.

11. Keep a Food Log

Logging meals and snacks can hold you accountable while also maybe finding some habits you may have when it comes to eating. If you continually snack at 2 pm after your last class, go for a walk or drink more water before hand to rule out dehydration.

12. Switch out for Health Alternatives

When grocery shopping switch out some staples like peanut butter for almond butter. Little changes can make a difference.

13. Get Good Sleep

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F10%2F13%2F636119922784923629-1674802102_sleep.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=162&h=252296ccfd325b99f23fa0647a984c5b3a31d97a7f5e784bd93c960aee962536&size=980x&c=384982318 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F10%252F13%252F636119922784923629-1674802102_sleep.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D162%26h%3D252296ccfd325b99f23fa0647a984c5b3a31d97a7f5e784bd93c960aee962536%26size%3D980x%26c%3D384982318%22%7D" expand=1]

This means not too many all nighters! It might be hard but it is important not to compromise your sleep.

14. Everything in Moderation

No reason to limit everything, everyone needs some junk food every once in a while!

15. Schedule "me" Time

[rebelmouse-proxy-image https://media.rbl.ms/image?u=%2Ffiles%2F2016%2F10%2F13%2F636119927111291838-1206228959_rest.gif&ho=https%3A%2F%2Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net&s=904&h=4d7f913e9d3870ed2d5316c83aa431cd9c116fde297ba2a53243044eb079a3b3&size=980x&c=257777102 crop_info="%7B%22image%22%3A%20%22https%3A//media.rbl.ms/image%3Fu%3D%252Ffiles%252F2016%252F10%252F13%252F636119927111291838-1206228959_rest.gif%26ho%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Faz616578.vo.msecnd.net%26s%3D904%26h%3D4d7f913e9d3870ed2d5316c83aa431cd9c116fde297ba2a53243044eb079a3b3%26size%3D980x%26c%3D257777102%22%7D" expand=1]

Allowing yourself personal time is important to both your mental and physical health. Scheduling in time for yourself is as important as scheduling in time for studying!

Social Media Or Soul Media

To the generation that cares way too much about affirmation.

Emma Smith
  • This semester I am taking the ever so famous class, Writing 101. Walking into it, I had heard the horror stories about each major assignment. I have to admit, it’s not a class that I am fond of. But, major assignment #2 got me thinking, we had to create a research question based off of a topic that we are interested in.

Two weeks prior, I watched a very interesting documentary on Netflix. Miss Representation was recommended to me by one of my friends and I have to say the topic is absolutely mind blowing. Social Media and Female Body Image. How Social Media makes girls see this unnatural perfection of ‘beauty’ that really doesn’t exist. But female body image isn’t the only thing affected by social media.
