Stop Being An "Onion"

Did you know that you never really know a person, even when you know them? Skeptical, right? Let's be honest with ourselves. Not only do you not know anybody well enough, but they do not know you either. That's because every puts up a mask, a face that they want everyone else to see because that is how they want the world to see them. It's about hiding who they really are so that no one can judge them or hurt them. Everybody has their "onion" effect as Shrek would say.

Now what Shrek means is that everybody has their own self behind what other people see. You have to peel them back one layer at a time in order to get down to the core of them. Especially in today's society and culture it is more possible for people to do this. Especially since social media allows us to post and say almost whatever we would like on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Snapchat are some examples. You can virtually become anybody you would like online. Then when you meet a person for the first time you start to peel back those layers, with questions or stories that you ask.

When you look over to your significant other, your best friend, or even one of your siblings do you know who they are? Do you have the relationship that strains deeper than, "Hey how is your day going?" If the answer to either of those questions is no, then you should do something about it. That's where this whole "onion" concept comes in.

Okay, that is not what I meant. But you get the point. EVERYBODY has layers like an onion. No matter who you are there is always something that you keep to yourself so that no one else finds out. You see the problem with today's society is that people do not try to get into that deeper level to try to get to know someone that is close to you. Well, why not?

Most college students just want to have the fast friends, the friends you hang out with when you're bored, the people you go to parties with or even go on trips with. It is said, that you will find your best friends in college. So why not start now? Find the people who care about you, who want to dig deeper into your soul and understand what you're thinking. Find the people who do not care if you just want to stay in one night instead of going out, or if you want to read a book instead of go to a party.

Now is the time to explore, to travel, to fall in love, to have your heart broken only to find the person of your dreams. It is also the time to fail, make mistakes but pick yourself up again no matter what. The people who care about you will be there when the time comes and that is the most important aspect of having friends. When you're dealing with stress, school, home life, boyfriend and every other aspect in your world; you want your true friends by your side.

So make that happen. Dig a little deeper. Don't be an onion anymore and let someone take the chance to see who you really are because nine times out of ten they will love you even more for it.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
