Either, or. Two very simple words which most people use on a daily basis. For very simple things such as gifts, food, or any other scenario where different desirable options are present. These two words have a much more dark implication about them if we really think about what they're capable of on a bigger scale.
Here's an example we can all relate to (dreadfully). In this new circus that is called The 2016 Presidential Cycle, many views are taken with undeniable and strong convictions. For example, a certain Republican nominee wants to basically stop all foreign immigration on all levels until we sort out our mess. That is not a political shot but it is just the truth. So now, if anyone opposes this belief, they are now labeled as someone who wants the national security of our nation to fall apart. How does that make sense? Since the national media and the plethora of voters choose to get their information from one source coupled with the ability in the day of misinformation, it is a total damp and dark breeding ground for voters.
In the realm of politics I don't really care what you are but if you've educated yourself with multiple sources and delved into the facts I can respect that. If not, there's a problem. Because if not whether you are a Democrat, Republican, or a Jedi you will spread your misinformed opinion and cast anyone else out (as an outcast).
Another hot topic of late is political correctness. Mainstream thinking in at least my experience is if you are pro P.C. you then lack backbone to tell how it is. On the other hand, if you are against it you are a rash, truth-telling prophet whose rough around the edges. But can't we as a society be both? I personally think it is in our culture not to concede...or not even to compromise. We didn't win two World Wars by compromising so why should we do that on a more practical level right? When you become an "Either/Or" person you lose the ability to become circumstantial, you lose the perspective to compare and analyze that at one moment something may be right and the next it's not. But you have to become okay with that. We cannot fear being wrong because those same people who reject the "P.C." culture for some topics can be the same ones who accept it on others.
To me, the "P.C" movement shouldn't have to be a thing, you should know that calling someone with an intellectual or physical disability or using racial stereotypes or anything else clearly derogatory is wrong and not reject that sentiment because you think our politicians have lost backbone therefore we need to overhaul the whole idea. Maybe we fix our own mistake then of electing said politicians instead of throwing the blame on someone else. Ridiculous. It's just that the standard of being "correct" evolves, and people don't like that. We all hate change. "Why should I be correct now if it'll just change in 20 years?" How about just realize what is right and wrong and we won't have that problem, that one idea doesn't apply to everything. That's like saying you love to bite into fruits whenever you eat them...oh okay so how many of those people always take a huge bite into a tomato or an avocado? This kind of thinking has gotten us into far too much trouble. Another example is if you have ever had a bad teacher? Probably, Definitely. Did you then hate every teacher you had after that? Unlikely. So when a bad law enforcement agent does a terrible thing and makes national headlines that shouldn't make all of them "killers". There may be an underlying issue with the system but that doesn't pertain to all of the law enforcement agents. Or when a terrorist commits an atrocity who happens to be Muslim, does that make all Muslims terrorists? When someone is killed with a gun, are instantly all gun owners murderers? No.
This type of mentality, the "either or" line of thinking, it's killing us. We as people, not just Americans, are losing our humanity, we are forgetting to think. For all of you Star Wars fans out there, Anakin Skywalker joins the Sith because he finds the current system inadequate in achieving peace, tranquility and preserving his relationship. The Sith are a misguided bunch who believe in the opposite of the established, so the desperate Jedi joined the Sith, famously proclaiming "if you are not with me, then you are my enemy". So instead of sitting down and thinking it through, he acted impulsively and ended up with a dead wife, no limbs, and a breathing impairment. Not to take away from the severity of this topic, but not just as a nation, but as simple, simple yet complex beautiful human beings need to stop being "Either/Or" people and find our humanity. There may be error, but we are all flawed. Absolutism invokes fear, but we cannot be afraid. Being a compromising, mistake-making person may not be perfect, but we need to embrace it. It's who we are. So please, find your humanity, or else it might be too late when we figure it out.
