Stop Acting Like A Stereotype If You Don't Want To Be Considered One

It's that simple.

So many times I have heard people complain about being stereotyped. They can not stand to be cast into a group of people that are associated with a certain set of qualities. And hey- I get it. I hate being stereotyped as well. However, if you act just like the group of people you are being associated with, how could you not be put into the same category with them?

We can not leave out our generations most used stereotype: basic. What even is basic? Letā€™s set up a definition within the context of this article.

Basic: a person who has all the things that society deems ā€œcoolā€ and does all of the things society claims people should be doing like drinking Starbucks for every meal and buying in to mainstream media and never investigating anything for yourself.

The main criteria for being considered basic is that you never question anything and you always just go along with what you are told. That is what our generations has started to do and that is what is cool. If you do not want to be considered basic, go out and search for things on your own.

I promise if you bring up the things you have been researching about the flat earth theory or d-wave quantum computing, NOBODY will EVER call you basic.

And you donā€™t have to believe in any of those things, but open yourself up to those things and learn something new. Stop conforming to society if you donā€™t like being stereotyped as ā€œbasicā€ and I promise you wonā€™t have to worry about that anymore.

There are tons of stereotypes that people hate being thrown into, but the people who complain about these stereotypes often carry out the actions associated with those stereotypes.

The thing is, society has created groups and sets so that people can be shoved into tiny boxes. If we want that to go away, we have to stop acting like the stereotypes that have been created.

Get up and do something outside of the stereotyped you have been placed in. If you do not want to be associated with a certain group of people, stop acting like them. Itā€™s that simple. And if you do act like them, you cannot complain when someone shoves you into that box.

So either suck it up or change how you act.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
