Different is not bad. Style is just that: style. It does not determine our intellectual ability, nor should we be treated like it does.
The clothing we choose to wear on our skin does not, and will never, be a measure of our intelligence. Stop complicating things. I like to wear rainbow jewelry and cats on my clothing, yet I can hold intellectual conversations. In fact, I actually prefer them over small talk.
I wear clothing simply because I like it. If dressing a certain way makes someone feel good about themselves, who are you to get in the way of their happiness? Who cares if it doesn’t fit social norms? Who cares if it “isn’t what people your age wear?” If it makes you feel confident, wear it. You do you. Unless you’re in a professional setting and are required to dress a certain way, wear only what makes you happy. Don’t wear clothing to try to adhere to any social norm- unless you feel comfortable with doing so. There is no right or wrong way to dress.
One of my pet peeves are when people use the word “immature” to describe clothing, or even worse, the individual who wears them. It simply baffles me that people’s intelligence is be something people believe can be determined by something as trivial as their clothing.
In our society, we praise those who wear business attire yet look down upon people who wear rainbow jewelry such as myself. One is perceived as mature and sophisticated, whereas the other is generally labeled as immature and a freak. This way of thinking is so wrong. We judge individuals based on their clothing rather than their personalities. We tend to not give the most amazing people chances due to their appearance. This also applies to tattoos, piercings, etc. as well. Thousands upon thousands of people are being shunned because of their appearances, and that is downright disgusting.
Clothing, body modification, etc. has NOTHING to do with people’s cognitive or intellectual ability. The only thing it tells you is what type of clothing they enjoy wearing. Give others a chance; you may be missing out on some amazing people.
