Don't Stereotype Me Just Because I'm Blonde

"So you're breaking up with me because I'm too...blonde?"- Elle Woods, Legally Blonde

Quite frankly, I don’t get any of the blonde jokes. I don’t mean that I don’t understand them because trust me; I do. I’m saying that I don’t know why they even exist. Who the f*** made a stereotype saying that most blondes are dumb?!? Honestly, I just don’t get it. In the past 19 years of my life I have heard COUNTLESS blonde jokes, all due to the color of my hair. “Why do blondes wear their hair up? To catch everything that goes over their heads.” “Why do blondes hold their hands tightly over their ears? Because they’re desperately trying to hold in a thought.” “How do you confuse a blonde? You don’t. They’re born that way.” “Three blondes walk into a building. You’d think at least one of them would’ve seen it.” UM…EXCUSE ME?!? Why should the color of one’s hair automatically give someone else the impression that that person is dumb?! Here’s the answer: it shouldn’t.

I for one am SICK of blonde jokes. Yes, I’m blonde. BUT I’M NOT DUMB PEOPLE. No man or woman should be stereotyped due to the pigmentation of their hair. It honestly doesn’t make sense. For blondes, it’s especially worse. Doing some research, I typed “blonde stereotype” into Google where many definitions appeared. According to Wikipedia, they say…

“Blonde stereotypes are stereotypes of blond haired people, especially women. Its sub-types include blonde bombshell and dumb blonde. Blondes are differently stereotyped from brunettes as more desirable and less intelligent. There are many blonde jokes made on those premises. Although said jokes are chiefly aimed at women, there have been blonde stereotypes sometimes associated with men, such as "dumb jocks" or "surfer dudes”.”

Don’t get me wrong, I know there are thousands of stereotypes out there based off of people’s appearances. But by being a blonde, I get ridiculed and made fun of many times a week. I get called names such as “easy,” “dumb”, and “classic blonde”. Well, that’s funny. Right?! Do they know that I graduated high school with honors? Do they know that I just finished my first year of college, ending with a 3.8 GPA? Do they know that I’m only 19 years old, but have a long resume? Do they know that what they say actually hurts? Think before you speak people!! Just because this stereotype has been around for a while, does NOT mean that it’s okay to ridicule someone based off of their hair/appearance. Yes, I may have blonde hair. But I’m not dumb. And that goes for a lot of people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
