There are many stereotypes in the world regarding different groups of people. One group of people that are often judged and ridiculed are sororities. They have some of the worst stereotypes out there, but this is how we defy them.
Society says...
1. Sorority girls are all the same.
But I have sisters from all over the world including Dubai, Hong Kong, Italy and Colombia.
2. We care about partying more than school.
I’ve made Dean’s List every semester, and many of my sisters care a great deal about their grades. Half of the time, some sisters even need to skip social events and parties to study, do homework, or rest up for a test.
3. We are followers, not leaders.
I’m president of my sorority and there are sisters who also hold some form of leadership position in my sorority. We are responsible for organizing philanthropic events and leading as an example for the younger sisters. Some of us even hold two positions.
4. We aren’t well-rounded.
I have sisters involved in clubs, pre-professional frats, and sports teams. We are encouraged by each other to be involved on campus, outside of sorority life. We are active members of our campus in more than one way, and that is what makes for a well-rounded individual.
5. It’s a waste of time.
I’ve learned leaderships skills, multitasking and commitment. That’s not a waste. I've also made lifelong friends who will be with me for the rest of my life. That kind of support system and love is special and unbreakable, and not everyone gets to have that.
6. We are stupid.
In order to even be considered an active member you have to maintain a certain GPA. Slacking off isn't allowed. We are pushed and mandated to keep our grades up.
7. We try to make everyone be like us.
We strive to be the best versions of ourselves so that when we comes together, we make a unique whole.
8. We're irresponsible.
But we have to always be on top of times, dates, and places. Just take one look at a sorority girl's planner.
9. We're selfish.
We continuously give back to our community and show support on campus.
10. We pay for our friends.
Actually, the money we pay helps us hold Philanthropy events and helps pay for involvement on campus. The friendships I’ve made are priceless.
Sorority girls are not our sterotypes. In fact, we couldn't be more opposite. Take the time to actually get to know who sororities are and what they do. You'll be surprised.
