Do me a favor. Take a moment and imagine the person that you trust most in your life. It could be one of your parents, your significant other, or your best friend, perhaps. Got it? Now, as crazy as it may sound, imagine that this person asks to blindfold you and lead you up a flight of stairs, hand-in-hand. They guide you, they lead you, and they direct your path. They coax you with their sweet, familiar voice as you bravely put one step in front of the other.
Upon your arrival at the top of the stairs, they congratulate you on your courage and perseverance. Just as you were about to slip your blindfold off they break it to you that the madness isn’t over. Now they ask you to travel back down the stairs, this time without their help. They will be with you throughout the entire journey and “every step of the way,” they promise. However, they can’t aid you in any way – talk to you, grab your hand, guide you. “It can’t be that difficult,” you challenge yourself. For heaven’s sake, I just walked them! I know they exist! I’ve gathered that the structure is sound! But how do you find that this person that you have placed all your trust in, won’t let you fall? How can you prove that they won’t abandon you? That’s just it – you don’t. You have faith that they will.
HEBREWS 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony. By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
Take a moment to digest that. “By faith, we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God.” By our hope in Him alone does the world seem just, does the world seem sensible. Without this understanding, we are lost souls without a compass aimlessly traveling. God dares us to build a life on a foundation of faith.
Believe me, I’ve been there – continually questioning the future; continually questioning what is to come. But ultimately, you aren’t just questioning a predetermined path for you – but you’re questioning HIM. So the next time you find yourself worried, scared, or anxious, PLEASE find comfort that he is holding you tightly in His grasp – He will not let you fall. He will not let you go. The only thing that will permanently diminish your fears is your faith in Him!
In the book of Matthew, we recall the parable of Jesus walking on the sea. As the story goes, His disciples found themselves in a boat in the middle of a waved-tossed sea. To their disbelief and amazement, they watch Jesus walking on water to reach them. At first, they were instilled with fear as they thought it was a ghost. Matthew 14:27 - But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid. Upon seeing this, Peter asks Jesus to command him to walk the sea (almost questioning his authority and power). And so he said, “Come.” And, just like that Peter walks the sea. However, as the wind increases, Peter becomes afraid (ultimately losing his faith in Jesus) and begins to sink crying out “Lord, save me!” Matthew 14: 31 - And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught him…
And so I say to you again - JESUS WILL NOT LET YOU FALL. No matter your circumstance, your position, or EVEN through your uncertainty!
I challenge you all to step out in your faith. Don’t just say you believe in Him – trust in Him. Trust that His every move is one that will grow you, strengthen you, and draw your heart near to Him (if you let it). Be courageous, friends, and walk on water even WHEN the wind picks up.
