Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

This morning, I ran the Long Beach Half Marathon. I kind of expected it to be horrible. Until today, I never understood why people voluntarily run marathons. I mean who wants to pay to run 26.2 (or 13.1) miles for fun? But, my friend begged me to run it with her and I figured I would do it just so I would have motivation to get in better shape. But, even this morning, I had a bad attitude about the whole thing. I was mad that I had to wake up at 4 a.m. and I really had no set goals for myself. I figured as long as I finished, I was fine with whatever time I got.

Running that race ended up being one of the coolest experiences of my life. From the minute I started running, I understood why people love running marathons. There was so much energy in the crowd of spectators and within my fellow runners. I really enjoy running, but usually after a few miles, I start to lose motivation. However, with so many people around me I was super motivated to keep up. I went into the race thinking it was fine if I walked part of it, but the second I began, I refused to let myself walk. As soon as I finished, I began making plans with my friends to run more and setting goals for myself to improve my time.

Running that many miles along the beach helped me clear my head. These past couple weeks have been stressful, to say the least. I was recently told that I might not be able to go down the career path that I have always dreamed about after graduation. So I have spent weeks obsessing over that and trying to talk to multiple people to get a definite answer. Running, this morning, was the first time I felt I was able to put things in perspective. My mind was clearer and I finally felt like I had time think. It was such a nice break from the worry and craziness of UCLA.

In the end, I walked away having gained a lot from the experience. I never thought I would have been able to run 13 miles, nonstop. I never knew how awesome running a half marathon is. I am truly grateful that I had the small amount of faith it took to step outside my comfort zone this morning.

The point of that little anecdote was to encourage you to step outside your comfort zone every once in a while. Try something you never thought you were capable of doing, or  would enjoy. You will probably find that you are stronger than you think, and you might find a hobby you really enjoy. And even if you hate it, at least you tried and have a pretty cool story.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
