Since going abroad last month, I have experienced an entirely new culture. This new culture has brought a new environment, new foods, and it has pushed me to choose between acquiring an unhealthy lifestyle or a healthy one. Each day, I am faced with choices that'd I'd never had to make before. Do I walk to class or take the bus? Do I eat breakfast at home or at the bakery directly below my apartment? I have found that it's easy to give in to temptations of taking advantage of the amazing new foods and experiences of a new country, but there is always a balance. Here are nine ways I have kept myself mentally and physically healthy.
1. Walk to class... and everywhere else.
Not only does walking to class help your physical fitness, but it also gives you a chance to stop and take photos and explore a little, which helps with mental clarity.
2. Eat local foods
Chances are, whichever country you are in has more natural options than you would find in the US. The food generally holds more nutrients than food in America. For example, gyros here in Greece contain protein, veggies, and probiotics.
3. Going off that, try to eat some food that reminds you of home
Food from home always helps you feel better and cures any homesickness you might have.
4. Take advantage of the gym discount you get with your student ID
Going to the gym has not only taught me some language and killer ab moves, but it has also given me a community that I love!
5. Start a journal to document your feelings
Nothing is more relieving than writing down all of the thoughts you have while abroad. It keeps you centered and helps to document all of the cool new things you're encountering!
6. Take some time for yourself
It is amazing meeting new people but remember to spend some time alone to reflect on your experience.
7. Take the stairs
To your apartment, to class, to the bathroom (they always seem to have those in the basement), it's always the time to take the stairs.
8. Don't feel the need to go out all the time.
You can go out in America. It is fun to get to know the people you're abroad with and the people from the country you're in. Go get dinner and drinks at a local bar to really get to know people and the culture.
9. Breathe.
Going abroad is a once in lifetime experience, so take advantage of the opportunity and breathe. Take the time to get to know the people and culture but also be one with yourself.
