Keeping in touch with your creative side is totally possible and equally as important when you get to college. It is easy to get really focus involved in everything falling under your major and lose touch with your creative.
If you are really interested in the arts, but are not an art or music major, please don't give it up! I know you exist because I am one of those people. Music and art are so important; without creative minds, the world would be really dull and boring. Luckily, Richmond is a place where art and inspiration are everywhere and VCU provides so many platforms for creativity.
When I was in high school, music was pretty much the reason I got up and went to school everyday. I was defiantly a choir nerd, but I knew that I did not want to make it into my career. I was really worried that going to college and majoring in something else would cause me to lose that important part of myself, but I was wrong. If you are super into music, but aren't a music major, you can join Choral Arts Society, the all major inclusive choir. You can audition for an a capella club or even join a band. Richmond has a huge and awesome music scene. I have been able to stay in touch with my musical side, something I value so much, without being an actual music major.
If you're into visual arts you can get overrides for art classes if you email the professor. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, an amazing museum with a vast amount of artwork, is located here in Richmond to help you stay engaged in the art world. I love going there to wander and get inspired, I see something new every time.
Creativity comes in many forms. I chose a major (journalism) that would let me incorporate creativity into my daily work without having to be super artistic or musically inclined. There are a lot of majors that allow you to be creative, like fashion merchandising or creative advertising.
It may seem like your major takes over every aspect of your life, but it is so easy to take a break from the seriousness and work the right side of your brain. Please stay artistic. We need that in this world and it can be useful in any career path you chose to take.
Don't let your major shelter you!
