It’s getting to that point in the year where we can no longer feel comfortable in our shorts and sundresses and we’re slowly beginning to take out those long pants and sweaters for the cooler weather ahead. As per usual, I packed a couple too many pairs of extra shorts and dresses hoping that the warm weather would hold out. But rather than being distraught by the cooling temperatures and neglected leftover summer clothes, I am looking forward to fun fall pieces that can enhance my wardrobe. Here are some of the essentials for this fall season.
Ankle Boots
While the classic brown/ black riding boots may never go out of style, try mixing it up with a shorter approach. Whether you opt for a flat heel or a couple inches of extra height, you can pair these booties with cuffed jeans or a flowy dress and a jean jacket and you’re ready to conquer the day.
Turtlenecks
I remember when I was younger I had several cotton turtlenecks in a variety of colors and my mom always tried to get me to wear them when the temperature lowered. Of course, I refused to sport this adult look, begging for her to let me wear my t-shirts that had prints of puppies on them instead. Today I’d much rather opt for my loose turtleneck sweater with a pair of dark jeans - it keeps me cozy and looks cute too.
Over-sized scarves
The Maine wind can easily make 50 degrees feel like 30 some days- but don’t worry, there are ways to keep warm and one of the best is with an over-sized scarf. They pair nicely with jackets and ripped jeans, but also look stellar with a loose sweater. This results in ultimate warmth and coziness.

Leather Jacket
Sure, walking frat row isn’t the same as walking the NYFW runway, but who doesn’t love a good black leather jacket- chic, simple, timeless, and comfortable. You can pair these with almost anything- I personally prefer the ‘all black everything’ look, but they also look sharp with a colored shirt/ sweater or a casual dress.

Chambray Shirt
This is a classic look that can be worn in so many ways- unbuttoned with a t-shirt or tank underneath, half-way buttoned with a scarf or tucked into a skirt, or even tied at the bottom with dark jeans.
Gray Cardigan
Yet again, another piece that can complement any look. Gray is great because it goes with almost any color and it can transition from a fall look to a winter style. Cardigans are essential for cool Maine days and an appealing way to stay warm.

White Blouse
A simple white blouse can be matched with almost anything whether you’re keeping it casual with a pair of skinny jeans or dressing it up with a patterned skirt- you most definitely cannot go wrong with this item, plus you can find a multitude of different styles and you’re bound to adore one of them.

Sneakers
Remember when sneakers and jeans were considered one of the most hideous looks on the planet? Well they’re back in now and have been dubbed “sporty chic.” Both comfortable and stylish- what more could you want?

Extras: Suede and Fringe
If you’re really looking to step outside of the box with this season’s styles, fringe and suede are the ultimate choices. If you combine them, you get brownie points for out of this world style.

Now I’m not saying you need to go out there and get five of each of these items, one alone will make you ~cool and trendy~ but if none of these styles appeal to you then that’s OK too! When you get dressed in the morning, put on whatever you want to wear and don’t let anyone tell you differently. As long as you feel like you look good, that’s all that matters. Creating your own unique style and looks are more important than conforming to the norm, so go have fun with it!
