More Standardized Tests? No Thank You.

Do they actually help?

More Standardized Tests? No Thank You.

In the United States, children as young as 7 years old become accustomed to sitting in a room for hours, and taking a test that really should not impact their education at all. I remember sitting in my 3rd grade class and my teacher telling me about this huge test that I had to take and how much it was going to impact her teaching. She explained how this test was going to show the state how well she was doing as a teacher. I immediatly became worried because I loved my teacher, I did not want to see her in trouble because of my failure. As we grow in life and in our schooling, we learn that this test that was supossed to test our teachers, could actually allow us to not graduate. In my state, we have to pass this exam in order to graduate from high school. Although some people find these tests incredibly easy, some people do not. As human beings, we all learn differently and are good at different things. As an upcoming teacher, it is our job to encourage the different skills of our students to allow them to do well. We should want to see our students succeed. Not every child tests well. Is it fair that we should universally test on a skill that is not universal? In the classroom, I was a very good student. I always understood the topics and information we were learning and recieved very high marks. When it came time for me to take the required standardized test for my town,I froze, and I failed. I knew the material, I understood what to do, I just didn't test well. This went on for every single year until 11th grade. This was the year that it counted towards my graduation, luckily I finally passed. Some people are not that lucky. Is it fair that our entire high school career is based off of one test. What if you have a straght A student, who does not test well, and they fail this test? Should you not be able to graduate for that? That seems crazy does't it? Well it happens. The only think that standardized testing promotes is self comparision against your classmates and painful realization when you try to stack up against the people in your town. As a society, we need to come up with a better way to test our students abilites and how much they have learned. It is important to remember that everyone has a different skill set, and if we aren't tuning into to other people's abilites, we are not getting an accurate read on how we are teaching our kids.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
