If you’re a college student, you will know the struggle of the second semester.
Whether it is because you use all of your motivation in the fall semester, or because the idea of summer is in the back of everyone’s mind. The second semester feels as if it drags on, and with warm weather inching closer and closer is a constant tease to college students. My friends and I are currently feeling the spring semester slump, so here are the 10 stages of the spring semester as told by “Friends.”
1. Welcome Back Stage
When the anticipation of moving back into school to see your friends is real, and reconnecting with each other after a month apart is nothing short of a mini Lifetime movie.
2. The Confident Stage
At the beginning of the term, you are confident that this will be your semester. You know, the one where you will finally get that coveted 4.0. As you walk into your classes that first week, you gaze over your syllabi and believe that you have this one in the bag.
3. The “Please Follow Your Syllabus” Confusion Stage
You always seem to have one professor that who treats their syllabus as if it is the bible. However, they usually change numerous things on it and somehow forget to notify the class. As a student, this can be one of the frustrating parts of college and can cause serious confusion.
4. Drowning In Work Stage
As a student, I dread having weeks where I feel like I’m drowning. However, there is always one week within the spring semester where your motivation is on zero and your professors all gang up on assigning work.
5. Dreading Night Classes, and Classes Overall Stage
As the weather gets warmer, the desire to go to class diminishes; but night classes in the spring semester are the absolute worst. At the beginning of the semester, you have to face the dreaded cold weather to attend the two-hour class. Then you have to give up time during the nice weather months where all you want to do is hangout with friends.
6. The “Going Out” or “Staying In” Decision-Making Stage
Almost every college student likes to go out and have a good time. However, when you have to make the choice to go to the local bar with your friends, or stay in and study for your big test in the morning, the decision can be almost painful. I mean, you can fail one test and still pass the class, right?
7. Dodging The Personal Questions From Family Members Stages
Everyone loves answering all of awkwardly personal questions from family members during the holidays. So seeing family on Easter usually means answering: How is class? Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend? How are your grades? Will you get a job with that major? How are you? And many, many more. Trying to answer these questions with as little information as possible has become a craft, one that college students know too well.
8. Coming Back From Spring Break and Hating Assignments Right Away Stage
Whether your professor assigns work over spring break, or gives you a quiz the first week back, it seems as if they do not understand that students have no desire to open a book or type a paper during a break. Give us time to rejuvenate – I promise, the work and grades will be better.
9. Worrying About Your Grades Toward Finals Stage
As the semester winds down, students start to become antsy with their final grades. Though they always seem to pull through, and laugh about how much time they spent studying and worrying about their grade. They do this every semester, and they always pass. What was the sense of worrying, right?
10. Realizing That Summer Is So Close, But You Still Have To Be An Adult Stage
Summer is so close – but then you realize that you have to work or intern during your “off” months. Knowing that you don’t actually have a break anymore, and you are quickly entering the real world is a terrifying thought.
