Now, I know this title can be a bit misleading, and some of you must have been imagining me discussing how to live the true life of making tons of money at only 18 years old. Alas, that's not the case. The kind of stacks that I'd like to talk about are book stacks. Books are going so out of style now, and I think that everyone needs a little pick-me-up and a reminder that books are our friends! With the new iPhone apps, Kindles and Nooks, it seems like there's almost no need for paperback books in our lives anymore. It's so much more convenient to buy a book while you're laying on your couch instead of getting up and going to the store to buy one. Books are also more expensive in person most of the time, and they're heavy. I totally get it.
Though books seem to have a plethora of reasons not to buy them, there's five times that number of reasons why you should buy them. Books have so much to offer you that your Nook does not. Walking into a bookstore alone is one of the most amazing experiences you can have. When you open the doors, it's always a little chilly, there's a crisp paper smell, and the soft hum of voices in the building are so soothing. You may also find a delectable coffee shop in or around your bookstore so make sure to check! Going to a bookstore is a very soothing activity and sometimes you can just go to relax and enjoy the quiet. You don't even have to buy a book!
When you pick up a book, it's much better than picking up a Nook. The screen isn't blaring bright in your eyes and you don't have to deal with it losing your place, lagging or disconnecting from the Internet. A paperback book is so much more satisfying than that. When you have to turn on a bed light so that you can read the pages in the wee hours of the night, it's almost like sneaking around when you aren't supposed to be reading. When you hold a book and rest it on your lap, the weight of it is so comforting. The pages smell so warm and crisp, they feel smooth yet somewhat sandy on your fingertips. Even the occasional paper cut, for the clumsy people like myself, is an experience that you surprisingly enjoy. There is nothing better than a book.
Kids are putting books away and pulling out their video games instead, and nobody is telling them to do otherwise. Mandatory school readings help, but they need an active want to read. Reading increases your vocabulary and it expands your mind. The more books that children read, the better writers they'll become in the future and the more cultured they'll become as adults. If you start them early, then they'll continue to love books throughout their lives. Most of the people that I've met in my life who read books are some of the most understanding and intelligent I know. There's nothing better than a book.
