Springfest 2016

Days like these remind us of the happier aspects of being Trojans.

In typically perfect Southern California fashion, the weather cooperated to provide one of the best concert/day experiences of my life. Though the artists were by no means my favorites, the day was supplemented by sets from the prodigal son, Matt DiMona, in that bizarre dome, and a timely lunch at Yoshinoya. Even so, Jamie xx provided one of the most memorable sets with his deep-house, electronic-noise type music. Noises one might associate with futuristic robots or malfunctioning 1960s-era cars were mixed and melded into a sonic experience that transported the listener to realms far removed from McCarthy Quad. It was, one might even go so far as to say, lit.

On a day as perfect as Saturday, Jeremih was probably the only blight. His radio-friendly singles did not do much to differentiate his performance and fell flat in the ears of many. I would argue that The Internet provided the snazzy R&B, lounge sounds that a heavy hitter like Jeremih should’ve added – meaning that the upcoming band superseded the industry veteran, especially considering the demographics of the crowd. Hopefully the committee will look farther afield and maybe consider adding an out-and-out rap performance that would bookend the night with more energy.

Aside from the music, allow me to wax lyrically on the implications of such a nice day. Days like these remind us all about the nature of college and the need to sometimes tamp down the excessively career-driven, stress-inducing attitude embodied by too many. It’s obviously a balance, and with the economy in the toilets, there is an added incentive to work even harder for that first job out of college, but ultimately the tendency to let loose manifests itself in far more destructive ways.

Rather, having the ability to mingle in the central quad without a thought of organization or creed had the effect of creating a far more unified student body, if only for a day. Call me sentimental, call me misguided, considering the continual struggle for a tolerant social climate, but I honestly think that Springfest was a perfect encapsulation of the Trojan family and the great relationships that stem from coming together on a little campus in the middle of Los Angeles. Loving music takes us higher and brings us closer.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
