All Ultimate Frisbee players know that the most important week of their year will be spent in the mystical southern sun playing at the annual High Tide Ultimate Frisbee Tournament. Each year teams from across the country will make the pilgrimage to Georgia, err Myrtle Beach, with the hopes of soaking up the sun, having a great time with their friends, and playing some epicly fun and competitive Ultimate.
This past spring break marked my third voyage to High Tide with Colgate's Ultimate Frisbee teams: the Jabberwock and the Vibe. In my years attending High Tide, I've seen many take full advantage of all the southern coastline has to offer as well as some who crumble under the pressure to make the most of their spring break trip. As such, I've prepared a handy guide for making the most of your High Tide experience on and off the field.
Do remember sunscreen
Us Northerners often forget the dangers of UV exposure during our harsh winters and get roasted (literally and metaphorically) when we first step out onto the soft sands of Myrtle Beach. We're all trying to get a nice tan, but avoid becoming a lobster by stocking up on some waterproof sunscreen.
Don't forget sunscreen
This may seem redundant, but it is completely necessary. Don't be that guy. Just wear sunscreen.
Do road trip down with your team
The drive from Colgate to Myrtle Beach lasts a little over 13 hours. I've never had more fun than I've had squished into an 11 person school issued van overnight.
Don't sleep through the entire road trip
While taking a long nap to prepare yourself for the week ahead may seem tempting, you definitely don't want to miss out on the hilarious delirious conversations your team will be having when everyone's phones die at 4 AM.
Do get awesome commemorative pinnies or tanks
Some graphic design wiz on your team will definitely craft up some exciting pinnies or tanks on CustomInk and they are always worth the investment. This customized team apparel can serve as fantastic beach wear, field wear and will have all of your marvelous memories from the week attached to it. What more could you ask for in an ideal souvenir?
Don't get ripped off at the Savage tent
While their merch is truly top of the line, it tends to be a little bit our of a college student's spring break budget.
Do eat breakfast before going to the fields
It's easy to sleep in on game days and rush of to the fields without breakfast, but remember that you'll be playing three full games before your next meal. At High Tide, the decision to get breakfast can make or break your day of play.
Don't worry about what you're eating
I ate more Chipotle this year at High Tide than I have in my entire life. #noshameinmygame
Do stay hydrated
Whether you're soaking up the sun on Myrtle Beach or sprinting for the disc on the field it's easy to get dehydrated. Keep replenishing those electrolytes throughout the day to make sure you won't get hit in the face by the activities you may choose to indulge in during the evening.
Don't forget to drink water
Keystone may have the basic consistency of water, but it will not help you stave off your shriveling into oblivion out in the heat of High Tide. Drink water and drink a lot of it.
