Spotted: PSU Kappa Kappa Gamma

With twenty Panhellenic sororities at PSU, it could be a little hard to get the low-down on each chapter, so I'm here to give you all the juicy details!

This week I had the honor to interview my own chapter president, Elen Filippatos. Even though I knew a lot of these answers myself, I thought that I'd ask anyways and fill you guys in on why Kappa is so great!... (I may be a little biased)

When and where was Kappa founded?

  • Kappa Kappa Gamma was founded in 1870 on October 13th at Monmouth College Illinois. The Delta Alpha chapter at Penn State was founded on October 3, 1930!

What are your colors?

  • Dark blue and light blue

How about your symbols?

  • The golden key

Whats your motto?

  • Aspire to be

What's unique about Kappa Kappa Gamma?

  • Kappa is unique because we are not all exactly the same, but still mesh as a unified group. We are diverse in so many ways, yet together we are just a group of fun-loving, down-to-earth girls who support each other in our similarities and differences.

Why did you want to be president?

  • I wanted to be president because I wanted to give back to Kappa in the best way I could. This sorority has given me amazing friends and expierences that I will cherish for my entire life.

What has been your favorite moment so far?

  • One of my favorite Kappa moments was attending our national convention this summer! A Penn State sister, our chapter adviser, and I had the opportunity to see Kappa on a much larger scale than we are used to. Being in a room with over a thousand of my sisters, bound by our values, rituals and experiences was an incredible feeling. We learned so much from each other and got to know so many new sisters

  • Why are you proud to be a Kappa?
  • I’m proud to be a Kappa because I am never alone. No matter what decisions I make as president, I always have 150 friends behind me. My sisters are constantly supporting me both as a leader and a friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
