With twenty Panhellenic sororities at PSU, it could be a little hard to get the low-down on each chapter, so I'm here to give you all the juicy details!
The first sorority on my list is Alpha Chi Omega. After talking to Elizabeth Merkouris, the chapter president, I got to know a little more about what her favorite moments were so far in her sisterhood and what makes the Alpha Chi girls unique.
When and where were you founded?
- Alpha Chi Omega was founded on October 15, 1885, at DePauw University in Indiana.
What are your colors?
- Alpha Chi’s colors are scarlet red and olive green.
What is your symbol and your jewel?
- Our official symbol is the golden lyre, reflecting our musical heritage, and our jewel is the pearl.
What has been your most memorable moment so far?
- So far, my most memorable sisterhood moment was Bid Day 2013! It was a great representation of all our TLC and hard work; we made the new members cute frames to take pictures in and flower headbands. All of our sisters came out for the day and were so ecstatic for the new members to have fun and feel the love; an older sister brought a bullhorn and we were blasting music with it, singing chants and dancing! All of our new members ran into the dance party with the biggest smiles on their faces; I know it was a moment the whole chapter will always remember!
Why are you proud to be an AXO?
- I am proud to be an Alpha Chi because of our dedication and service to our philanthropic endeavors. Everybody is really involved and always willing to lend a helping hand. We raise money, hold clothing drives and give our time to shelters that protect victims of domestic violence, our philanthropy. We also love partaking in other organizations' philanthropic events. One of our most prominent achievements is that we make the Top 5 in fundraising almost every year in THON. I am so proud of how much we do for others so selflessly, and I'm so happy to be a part of such an extraordinary organization.
