Movies are great. Sports movies are the greatest.
But why is it that we love them so much? Here are my five reasons why...
1. They are real.
Some of the most amazing sports stories are the ones that actually happened. Most sports movies are based on actual events and stories. This gives audiences a glance into the lives of athletes at that time, or in that place. Watching these movies allow us to relive history and relish in those glory days or moments.
2. They are universal.
No matter your age, sex, or race, sports and competition is in all cultures. They unite groups and countries for a common cause. Even if you are not an athlete or have never played the sport featured in the film, they still have lessons and stories that anyone can relate to in their own way.
3. They make us feel.
They make us cry. They definitely pull at the heart strings. Even for the toughest of us movie watchers, these movies are still able to choke us and bring a tear to our eye (or in my case, a whole river of tears).
They make us laugh. While many of these movies are dramatic and emotional, they always seem to slip in scenes or quotes that put a smile on our face and make us chuckle.
They make us excited. Even if I am watching a movie for the 50th time, I still sit on the edge of my seat as I watch eagerly. They are full of last seconds on the clock or final games, which makes ours hearts beat and adrenaline pump. That rush is an addicting feeling.
4. They inspire us.
These movies tell us stories of the underdogs' climb to the top, the last chances to prove oneself, and the triumphs over struggles. There is a process of overcoming adversities and hardships, which encourage us to do the same in our own lives. They show the time, sweat, and determination it takes to achieve something. They always seem to slip in a speech that gives us goosebumps, and with that and the rest of the movie, we become empowered to work harder towards our goals.
5. They are memorable.
Once you watch a sports movie, it is hard to forget. Many have the same story line setup and similar happy or successful endings and yet each is unique. They can be watched over and over without ever getting old.
Sports movies, you are real and universal. You make us feel a rollercoaster of emotions. You inspire us and you are unforgettable.
You truly deserve a gold medal.
Thank you.
