Spending alone time with God is something that can be easily overlooked. With your busy everyday schedule, it may be hard for you to even find free time to get enough sleep at night. Trust me, I get it, I struggle with it too.
It can be easy to push spending one on one time with God to the back burner, but the truth is, it needs to be our first priority.
Now you may be thinking, "If I go to church on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings, then why do I need to spend quiet time with God?"
Well you see, your relationship with God is like relationships with any of your friends. When you spend time with them, you get to know them more and your relationship with them grows. The Bible is filled with many different comparisons to help us conceptualize our relationship with God. For example, Christ is depicted as the bridegroom, and the Church is depicted as the bride. When the Bible talks about marriage, it explains it as the idea of two coming together as one, and that kind of intimacy is built only by spending alone with one another. Another way that we can look at it is that of a father and a child. Close parental relationships are built by spending quality one on one time with each other.
When we spend one on one time with God, we get to know Him differently than we do in group settings. God desires a personal relationship with us. He has that agape, unconditional love for us. He knows us better than we know ourselves and has our purpose planned out for us. He knows what is best for us and wants for us to know Him.
That time with Him can be spent in many ways.
Plugging yourself into The Word. God's Word is how we get to know more about Him and the promises that He has for us.
We can also spend time talking to Him one on one. Just telling Him about your day, about your hopes and dreams, about your likes and dislikes. Communication is how you get to know each other more. So as you go throughout your week, try to carve out some time to spend with the Lord. Whether it be the when you wake up in the mornings, before you go to bed, or some free time in between, find time to get to know Him better!
Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you.
