Spaces
Let's talk about spaces.
Spaces in between sidewalk chalk lines and the undersides of my shoes.
Spaces between my fingertips.
Spaces between us when I drove away too fast for you to follow me.
Spaces between college applications and university withdrawal slips.
Spaces between cadences and motorcycle purrs.
Spaces between lines in stanzas and stop sign pauses.
Someone's hands holding the spaces between lovers.
And my faith holding onto broken picture frames
As if clenching tighter onto the glass would hold the past together.
Cigarette breaks between the spaces in my time card
Make sore hands and tired eyes numb
To the reality of it all.
The reality that once we start working for freedom
The money becomes our chains and shackles
Because no matter how many jobs I work
Or how close the car payments cut it
There will always be spaces.
Spaces for new let downs.
and downgrades
That make me spend my spaces on cheap coffee and
Ephemeral triumphs.
Let's talk about spaces.
The spaces between breaths of air
And breaths of life.
Windmill waterfall kisses under the shade of streetlight curtains
Turn into "I need space" as if
The spaces I already gave him
when he found shelter in the spaces
Between another girls legs weren't enough.
Spaces.
Lets talk about the spaces we should be filling
With the warm company of
Good people with better intentions.
Filling them with memories of laughter and smoke screens
Instead of the spaces between
Having a full tank
And spending your time on someone who shouldn't matter.
