Riding off the success of their huge anime hit, "Kill la Kill," Trigger comes back full force with their newest show this year: "Space Patrol Luluco." This is a step down from the average 20 plus minute episode, using less than 10 minutes for each episode. Even with that, director of anime classics like "Gurren Lagann" and "Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt," Hiroyuki Imaishi makes that time well worth spending in each episode.
The story takes place in a science fiction setting where 20 years prior to the story, aliens have been accepted into the space colonization frontier zone, known as Ogikubo as immigrants. Luluco and her father live in this zone, and he works for the highly respected Space Patrol. With the strange world around her, Luluco manages to lead a fairly normal life, which she prides herself on. One morning during breakfast, her father accidentally swallows a pill that puts him in a frozen state (literally), and she takes him to the Space Patrol to get help. The head of the Space Patrol, Over Justice, tells her that she'll have to work for Space Patrol in order to pay for the procedure to restore her father, and so ends the normal life she worked so hard for.
From the first episode, I was already hooked. I feel I have a bias towards Trigger Studios because they produce anime that go all out. They produce high energy shows and over the top, fun ,and interesting characters, and I like that. Look at Over Justice in the above image. Not only is he a funny reference to Imaishi's past works, he is classic Trigger insanity, and I feel its going to ramp up higher. It's an easy way to get me to keep watching. "Gurren Lagann" and "Kill la Kill" stay at the top of my favorite anime list because I have so much fun getting hype at those explosive moments. Luluco turns into a gun and fires planetary destruction level lasers at criminals and one character makes their entrance via a meteorite into a classroom. If you're in for a crazy ride, "Space Patrol Luluco" is definitely one you won't want to miss.
