Southern Sweet Tea Recipe

Sweet tea is one of the most delicious drinks a person can enjoy on a hot summer day. Sitting in the shade on your porch with a big glass of sweet tea is incredibly satisfying, if you haven't tried it before you really must; here's a recipe.

It's interesting to note the history of sweet tea. First off, sweet tea is not iced tea. It has much more sugar, ice, and tea. Sweet tea was created down in the South at some point in the 1800s. At the time, ice was one of the most expensive items around, as was sugar and black tea leaves. So rich southerner's combined these three pricey items to create sweet tea. It was a way to show off how wealthy you were. Sugar, ice, and tea are now cheap, so anyone can afford this delicious drink.

Ingredients:

  • 6 tea bags (black tea such as English breakfast)
  • 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 cups of boiling water
  • 1-2 cups of sugar
  • 6 cups of cold water
  • Ice
  • Lemon wedges

Steps:

  1. Place the 6 teabags in a large glass container (a large pyrex measuring cup or a pitcher works well)
  2. Put 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda in the container with the tea bags (it prevents the tea from getting too bitter)
  3. Boil 2 cups of water and pour it over the teabags. Cover and let it brew for 15 minutes or so.
  4. After 15 minutes, remove the tea bags. Do not squeeze them.
  5. Pour the tea into a pitcher that will hold at least 8 cups of water (a two quart pitcher works well)
  6. Add 1-2 cups of sugar. It will be very sweet, so start with less and add as you want more. Stir until it's mostly dissolved
  7. Pour in 6 cups of cool water.
  8. Put it in the fridge to chill. Serve with ice and a lemon wedge.

Leave a pitcher of sweet tea in the fridge for whenever it's hot out and you need a refreshment.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
