If you give a girl a soul sister...

Hey, Soul Sister
Ashley Hill

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have a friend for life. Someone to rely on, laugh with, cry with, eat with, and ultimately live with. A soul sister is defined by Urban Dictionary as someone who fully understands you. Like a soulmate, but not someone you want to marry and make babies with. The sister of your soul. In order to qualify as a soul sister, a girl must be three things: understanding, caring, and (almost) identical to you in every way possible. It’s not that often that a girl finds someone exactly like her, and usually, it's a good thing! It’s great to have all different types of friends, but at the end of the day, every girl needs a soul sister.

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have someone to finally win “Most likely to always be seen together” awards with. I don’t know about you, but I waited a long time to find a best friend that I could constantly be around without getting irritated. Sure, we all had those friends in middle school that we sat with at lunch or walked to class with, but I’m talking about the friends that stay the night on a Tuesday just so you can watch "Pretty Little Liars" together. The friends that will pick you up from your apartment just so they don’t have to walk home alone at night. You’re always together, no matter what. Even if you fight, you know it’ll end pretty soon, since you have class together the next morning.

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have someone who understands her, no matter how often she abbreviates things. Most best friends even develop their own language, which sounds weird at first, but it makes sense. It’s full of inside jokes, abbreviations, and code names for boys they don’t like (or really like). This can often be the most annoying part about having a soul sister, simply because no one else will understand half the things you guys say.

Despite the fact that no one understands what you’re saying, they’ll start talking like you two, just because they’re so used to it. She’ll be mistaken for you 50 percent of the time. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have been called my soul sister’s name, only to be told we're basically synonymous. Part of this is due to the first thing I mentioned, since people aren’t used to seeing you two apart. At first, this can be annoying, but you finally accept it, because hey, if you have to be confused with someone, it might as well be your best friend!

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have to accept that her friend has other friends. As I write this article, I’m sitting in my apartment, waiting for my best friend to get back. Even though we live completely separate lives and have plenty of our own friends, we always end up waiting for the other person to come back from that separate life. It can be weird at first, hearing about all of these other people and trying to keep up, but eventually you’ll find yourself asking about her other friend’s second cousin’s dog, and all will be right with the world.

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have an automatic support system. The first thing I do when something exciting/dramatic/sad/happy/heartbreaking happens in my life is text my soul sister. Usually it’s just an “SOS” text, and I end up telling the story in person. Regardless, I know that she will always be there for mem no matter how many times I stress about that new job, or complain about that ex-boyfriend, or ask her to go get Mexican food with me.

If you give a girl a soul sister, she’ll have someone who understands her more than she understands herself. Sometimes I find myself upset for absolutely no reason, but my soul sister can tell. Sometimes I can’t decide what I want to order at Qdoba, but she knows. It’s the fact that someone knows you better than you know yourself that makes having a soul sister that much better. Someone to pick you up when you fall down, make you laugh when you want to cry, and drive to you to the mall just because you’re bored. A soul sister is the end-all-be-all, puppy-hugging, Krispy Kreme road-tripping, window-shopping, "Friends"-quoting, queso-loving best friend.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
