As an incoming Freshman, it can be a bit confusing when someone tells you you'd be a good fit for a sorority.
"So, you might want to rush, but you've heard terrible things?"
Is that a stab at your personality and morals? Are they calling you shallow and self-centered, or is there more to the organizations than what is let on?
Sororities are stereotypically known to be groups that party obsessively and only care about looking pretty. Despite that, there are actually some who are the exact opposite.
Take my sorority, Tau Beta Sigma, for example. We pride ourselves in being devoted to serving and promoting the marching band and other music organizations.
We're a co-ed sorority, which means that students of both genders are allowed to join, and we honor academic excellence along with having a passion for music.
I was initiated into TBS during the spring of 2017, and I instantly gained 41 new family members I love with all of my heart. I knew this was bound to be my home when I rushed.
When I began to get to know everyone, I had no idea we'd grow so close over such a short period of time.
"But how is it any different from a normal sorority?"
Please define what you mean by 'normal'. Do we party excessively? No, because we have stuff that has to get done. I don't think that your 'normal' sorority is what you believe it to be, either.
"But you definitely make sure you look good, right?"
Duh. We always want to make a good impression on potential members, as does any sorority. Although, that doesn't always have to do with looks. We make sure we have pride and respect for what we do and represent.
"So you're not actually a sorority."
Honestly, if your idea of a real sorority means partying every weekend, turning away people who aren't conventionally pretty, and only caring about what we wear, then no, we're not a real sorority.
We're so much more than that.
We're a family that accepts those who are devoted to music. We take the time to help those who need helping, while serving our school and giving back to the programs. We go above and beyond in anyway possible to make our sisters proud, and know that putting this organization on our resume will only increase our value as a leader.
This doesn't apply to just Tau Beta Sigma either, but to any sorority as well.
Don't decide not to rush anywhere based off of what you see on TV and in movies. Learn more about Greek life before you make your assumptions that they're all too shallow for your tastes.
You'd be surprised what ends up being just a stereotype.
