Yes I'm A Sorority Girl, But Here's What I'm Not

I didn't "buy my friends"

I think there's such a negative stigma around Greek life in this world. Movies and TV have made it out to be crazy, continuous partying and full of hateful people all based on looks. I love being a part of Greek life for so many reasons. Here are some misconceptions about Greek life debunked.

1. I Didn't "Buy My Friends"

Giphy

My sisters are my friends because we all share common values, likes, and dislikes. We spend every day together, live together in the house, share group chats, and have similar majors so we are always together. No amount of money could've made the bond my sisters and I have and I wish people would realize the true bond between sisters because it's magical.

2. We Really Care About Our GPA's and Grades

Giphy

There's a certain GPA every Greek house requires you to meet in order to stay an active member. Plus, we always encourage study dates with other people in the house and some houses even throw study events to raise money for charities. Also, some of the top scholars known were in Greek life soooooo...

3. Philanthropyyyyyy!!

Giphy

Many people think we don't do anything but socialize when really our whole existence is based on philanthropies! We spend every semester raising awareness and money for the foundations we love and we have all ended up being some of the primary monetary donors for those causes!

4. We Don't Judge Based Off Looks

Giphy

It's what's on the inside that truly counts. We all have found our houses by our personalities and values, not by our looks. A house will want you if you share the same value as them and that's how you'll find your people.

5. We Also Don't Judge By The Brands You Wear

Giphy

It's true that many of the girls you may see in one house might all have something similar by a certain brand altogether, but that's just what being sisters is like. it's not like you have to buy certain expensive brands or dress a certain way to "fit in." Greek life is all about being yourself!

6. I'm Not Living Off "Daddy's Money"

Giphy

Most of us are on academic scholarships and have to maintain grades and a good image to keep going to our college. Not all of us were born rich, you know?

7. Partying. Nonstop Partying.

Giphy

It's true with any college student that it's fun to go out every now and then, but it isn't what Greek life consists of. Greek life is supposed to be finding your forever people, your second family, and your home away from home. These are the people you will rely on on your best days and worst, you don't have to party for that to happen. Plus, believe it or not, there are certainly Greeks who don't party or choose to stay away from that lifestyle.

7 Reasons You Should Order A Vodka/Water/Lime When You're Out

There’s a reason the Vodka/Water/Lime is the number one drink at The Strip every weekend.

We’ve all been through it. Whether it was sometime in high school, out freshman year of college or the day we turned 21, at some point you have or will tried to order a drink while you’re out on the town. I’m here to end all the experimentation, and give you a go-to drink that is sweeping across college campuses everywhere, the Vodka-Water-Lime, and the reasons why, are clear to see.

1. It will keep you hydrated

It may seem trivial but hydration is key if you’re planning on drinking any amount any time, or so I have been told. But let’s face it, biology grants us the ability to chug concoctions called 4-Lokos with ease while drinking the recommended amount of water per day almost impossible. The drink that solves both issues—Vodka-Water-Lime.

2. It doesn't taste that bad

I’ll admit I was a little skeptical at first, but this drink isn’t that bad to swallow, especially when you think about some of the other things you could be drinking. There’s a reason why the only way people can drink tequila is in shot from or in a lime slushy. As the old saying goes: if you drink enough everything just tastes like water, and this one already has water in it!

3. It gets you drunk

That’s right. It does the job. Isn’t that really all we want in a drink anyway, everything else is just trivial.

4. It establishes immediate common-ground

What is that girl next to you at the bar about to order? You guessed it. Now imagine that you are about to order the same thing, she is practically begging to dance on you at this point, it’s that easy.

5. Easy, Quick, Universal

There are just three simple ingredients, and the amounts of which are subject to your personal preference and tolerance levels. It doesn’t require the aid of Chet the self-proclaimed mixologist to make—it’s so easy a baby could do it! And it’s known virtually everywhere, if you’re ever in a place that doesn’t have either vodka, water, or limes, you’re probably there against your will anyway.

6. Health Benefits

Since most people don’t drink liquor straight, the use of a chaser or mixer is required, but we all know the problems that causes. Sugar and alcohol don’t mix well, not to mention the calories in soda. Vodka-Water-Lime has not calories and no sugar added. On top of that, the presence of water and lack of soda is almost a guarantee that you won’t be hungover the next day.

7. It's shameless

With all of the numerous benefits, it’s impossible to give someone a hard time for ordering this, yet it happens. Becky’s friends may tell her that she looks great and shouldn’t be concerned about her calories. WELL MAYBE BECKY JUST LIKES THE TASTE. Still, Bradley may get bold and order one out with the boys, but since there’s nothing to crack open, he may be the butt of their jokes, but Bradley knows that he made the right choice.

NOTE: limes can be substituted for other in-season citrus fruits.

There’s a reason the Vodka-Water-Lime is the number one drink at The Strip every week. The facts are there; it’s not fake news. Vodka-Water-Lime should be your new drink. It’s not just something you adopt in college or for a few nights out, it’s a lifestyle. The Vodka-Water-Lime is classy and sophisticated, it is a drink that you can order somewhere fancy like a restaurant or a Carnival cruise ship, or even on your wedding night.

I Dropped My Sorority And I Am So Much Happier

The only thing I miss is the food, tbh.

When I was a wee little lass in the 4th grade, my sister went off to college and joined Alpha Alpha Alpha*. Ever since that young age, I was enamored by the fancy letters, pretty girls, and strong bonds of sisterhood. I wanted the same happiness my sister found for herself.

A few months ago, I joined a sorority of my own to follow in my sister's footsteps. She ultimately ended up dropping after a year due to "differences," but I never truly understood what she meant until I joined for myself.

I realized a bit too late that as someone who flowed against the current, my differences weren't celebrated, but instead, they were the reason I was picked apart.

Too weird. Too fat. Too loud. Too politically correct. Too outspoken. Too boring. Too feisty.

Do they have some truth to them? Of course. I'm a self-proclaimed, boring pug lady who prefers a quiet night at Marston reading VICE overpaying a bouncer $20 at Mid. I love carbs, making bad Tiller videos, and FaceTiming my boyfriend to watch Ratatouille.

I was not the typical sorority girl they wanted me to be, and although it may not be the fairest, I've learned to celebrate my own unique perspective on life instead of trying to fit a predefined mold.

That's not to say everything was terrible— I met some of the most incredible women there. Some of my highlights from freshman year involve my best friends I met through my chapter. These are the people who believe in me and support my passions and I'm forever grateful.

It took me a long time to decide to drop and an even longer time to write this. Both situations didn't come without tears, regret, and a whole lot of Maggie Rogers.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that life goes on after you leave the shiny, pearly gates of greek life. In the SEC, it seems like the world revolves around who you know, what your letters are, and who's cooler you're painting.

I promise you that there's more to college than this.

So celebrate your differences, find your people. Be who you are and do what makes you happy.

I know I did.
