Sororities - Why They're Worth It

Throw out your stereotypes and swap 'em for some sisters

Sororities - Why They're Worth It

There is a lot of judgement and stereotypes that revolve around greek life and, if you're like me, you base your knowledge off those stereotypes because that's all you know. As an outsider of the greek life you aren't aware of all that goes on, your only view is through social media, and the people who wear their letters to classes.

I decided to give greek life a try my freshman year in college, and was totally overwhelmed with the whole experience. I ticked it off my list of possible clubs and organizations to join as too overwhelming. I went on the rest of freshman year perfectly fine, until my older brother transferred to my university (Akron) and he joined a fraternity. He absolutely loved it and encouraged me to give it another try. I had longed for a group that I could call my second family, and he found his, so when I heard about a new sorority coming to campus I jumped at the opportunity

.

So there I was, beginning of my sophomore year, and I was finally attempting to find my home once again. After meeting with all of the girls of Delta Zeta, I knew instantly where I belonged. I'm so glad that I waited out my freshman year rush, because though all of the girls in the other sororities were amazing and welcoming, it didn't feel like they fit me. I'm finally where I belong and if you're considering greek life, here's a few reasons why you should take the plunge and join:

1. The beautiful souls you meet.

I've never met a group of girls more welcoming and loving than the sisters of my sorority. Being sure that you love and get along with your sisters is SO important because you spend hella time together and they become your support system. Everyone is so excited to be a part of a beautiful sisterhood, and they all want to get to know you. You're definitely going to find those sisters for life because you're literally sitting in a room of girls who chose this sisterhood because they have the same values and beliefs as you. EMBRACE THEM.

2. You get out of your room.

Being in greek life means that there is absolutely always something going on or someone to go out with. Want dinner? About five girls will volunteer to go with you. Bored? There is probably a philanthropy event going on somewhere on campus. Having something to do will create the memories and people that you will cherish forever, not those netflix nights that will mean nothing to you in 20 years.

3. More than just sisters.

Obviously, your sisters are one of the best parts, but you are immersed in more than just sorority life, you are thrown into the greek community. The fraternity men and other sorority women are not your enemies lol, they are just excited to meet you and they are more than willing to get to know you. Greek life gets you out of your comfort zone.

Yes there are about a bajillion more reasons why you should consider greek life, but finding those reasons for yourself is just as important. If you've rolled your eyes through this whole article then you are probably basing your judgement off of preconceived stereotypes, which is fine, but I urge you to open your mind a little more. Greek life is an experience that literally lasts you a lifetime, and it binds you with women all around the country. Also, quick shoutout to Delta Zeta because they're the reason I support greek life so much!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
