The Sophomore Year Struggle

What exactly does sophomore year entail?

The Sophomore Year Struggle

Sophomore year of college brings a whole new set of struggles, challenges, and unanswered questions. Sure enough, it is better than freshman year, but let’s be honest, what isn’t? Freshman year brought back all kinds of flashbacks to the awkward stage that was beginning high school, so I was more than ready for whatever demands and questions the second year of college would throw this way.

Is it too early to apply for internships? With a full year of classes, exams, papers, and presentations behind us, we may be ready to take on an internship for the summer. But the difficult part is convincing the desired company that we aren’t too young or inexperienced (or desperate, although we may be). We just need to figure out how to put “Hi, my freshman year GPA was ehhh, but I swear I’m smart. Please hire me. Okay thanks,” on our resumes.

Are we even relevant? We are no longer the eager freshman who have the best four years of their life ahead of them, we are not quite the juniors who are working feverishly on their work that will catapult them into graduation, and we are far from joining the real world with the seniors. We’re just kind of here, chillin’. We do our work, go to class, watch Netflix, and go out on the weekends. And uh, yeah, that basically covers sophomore year.

Is it too late to change majors? We haven’t gotten too far into classes specific to our majors where there’s no turning back without spending another year and half on top of the preferred four. We’ve gotten the slightest indication of what our futures could look like if we stuck with our original major, which may have us signing up for more or running to our advisors office. Regardless, it isn’t too late to reevaluate our entire college lives, I do that like twice a day anyway.

Can I finally handle a job and schoolwork? We all know what it’s like have an endless supply of homework and on top of that to be broke. That’s like your typical college student definition. But with sophomore year comes a years worth of experience as to how to finish a weeks worth of work in a half hour, which leaves plenty of time for other things. With that comes the opportunity to throw a job into the mix. You’ll still have an infinite amount of work, but at least you’ll be able to afford enough Starbucks to keep you awake to do it.

  • Can we actually do this whole college thing? We applied, we got accepted, we successfully (or just barely) made it through our first year, we passed, and now here we are. Contrary to what anyone has ever told us, we are capable of getting through this - homework, exams, presentations and all. At this point we're comfortable where we are and can somewhat cruise along until the brick wall that is junior year hits us right in the face. So until then, be grateful we have plenty of time left of what could be the best years.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
