8 Songs To Scare Away Your Winter Blues

It's time of the year where the weather cools down and the skies can be lifeless and grey. Don't let to the cold get to you, pop in some ear buds and blast the winter time blues away.

There are plenty of studies that show seasonal depression is a real and very difficult thing to deal with when we are on our own in school. Some of the ways that I combat that is with music. I wanted to make a playlist and what helps me available to others, so all these songs and more are, of course, on a Spotify playlist that you can find here.

Float On - Modest Mouse

Need something to help you deal with a bad day? Listen to this song. Not feeling yourself today? Listen to this song.

Breezeblocks - alt-j

I found this song in September of 2016 and I constantly have this song on shuffle. It's one of the only songs that helps me feel grounded (the gist of this article).

Riptide - Vance Joy

This song has been in my music library since I was in 8th grade. I got it originally as the iTunes Free Song of the Week. I don't think they even do that anymore, but the lyrics and melodies that are heard in this song spark imagination and give me a sense of color.

The Chain - Fleetwood Mac

I am 100% convinced that I will never stop loving Fleetwood Mac. I am always in the mood to listen to Stevie and Mick, even in bleak weather it reminds me of feeling warm sun on my skin and feeling like nothing could ruin my day.

Home - Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

The first time I heard this song was from the movie Crazy, Stupid, Love and it had a huge impact on me when I was in middle school. I revisit this song a lot when I feel like I'm out of place or not myself. The lyrics in this one tell a love story between the two vocalists and will forever be a favorite.

Ladders - Mac Miller

If you haven't listened to Mac Miller yet, this is your chance. Another artist that I have been listening for years and will always have love for.

See You Again - Tyler, The Creator

On a bit of a genre shift, Tyler, the Creator released this album in 2018 with lyrics that depict a more nostalgic story telling. While in this song, Tyler raps/sings about the absence of someone in his daily life, the upbeat and optimistic tune that it is paired with reminds me of the spring and gives me the strength to make it through the brutal cold on my way to class.

Still Into You - Paramore

This playlist would be incomplete without Paramore. Haley Williams' iconic red hair is enough to add some color to our wintery days.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
