Whenever I’m feeling down or stressed out, there are three things I can always count on to cheer me up: Talking to my mom, mac n' cheese and music. Music always has a way of getting through to us when other means don’t suffice. Whether it’s just happening to hear a song at the right moment, or seeing it in a new light after going through a new experience, music speaks to provide further insight into whatever we may be going through at any given time. I’ve compiled some songs that aren’t necessarily known for being inspirational or “kumbaya” in nature, but, upon further reflection, have made me realize just how much they make me feel better about myself. In a way, they encourage me, to quote Avril Lavigne, to “keep holding on.” Hopefully they inspire you to feel the same!
1. “Uma Thurman” by Fall Out Boy.
You can move mountains, you can work a miracle and you bet your bottom dollar you can dance like Uma Thurman if you want to.
2. “I Wanna Get Better” by Bleachers.
This song is notable for expressing there is strength in admitting there are things about yourself you want to change. It’s about being open to change, and whatever possibilities may come your way. You’ll be shouting from the rooftops how you wanna get better just like Jack Antonoff.
3. “Smile” by Mikky Ekko.
Along the same lines of the "Bleachers" tune, this one also resonates with a similar uplifting message. It reminds you that the future is always waiting for you, but there’s security in that it will always be there for you. There’s nothing we can do about its inevitability, but that’s what makes the idea of the future both great and terrifying at the same time. So all you can really do is stop and smile at where you’re at every once in a while.
4. “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.
This throwback will always be a classic in my heart. You can't listen without picturing yourself blasting this in your car, with the windows rolled down, screaming it at the top of your lungs.
5. “Come Clean” by Hilary Duff.
I promise this will not be a list of theme songs from past MTV reality TV shows. I don’t know what it is, but I happily sing along to this, even now as a 19-year-old girl. This is just one of many classic Duff songs that make you feel you’re invincible. Let your metamorphosis shine because why not?
6. “Beautiful Girl” by Sara Barielles.
This Barielles tune is easily forgotten when it deserves a lot more attention. It’s really reassuring to listen to at those times when you second guess everything you once praised yourself to be. It’s like having a friend or aunt console you, reminding you how amazing you are.
7. “BO$$” by Fifth Harmony.
Michelle Obama better watch out because you’re giving her a run for her money, or should I say "purse," which is so heavy from those hard-earned Oprah dollars (see what I did there?). There’s something about this song that, whenever it comes on, I feel so empowered. Although “Worth It” may have seemed like the obvious choice, I feel this serves as more of an uplifting message instead of just trying to get some booty. Get booty, but also get your career on!
8. “Hallelujah” by Panic! At the Disco.
Brendon Urie truly delivers in this song, making it an underrated anthem. I like it because it’s talking about embracing your mistakes and welcoming in more. We are our flaws and our mistakes, but learning to accept them and wear them proudly on our sleeves makes us even stronger.
9. “Drag Me Down” by One Direction.
The title says it all. You are fierce, so bring on the protesters who try to prove otherwise. I especially like this song because it also reminds you that you’re not alone. Whoever you have by your side, whether it’s your significant other, friends, or family, you don’t have to go through life alone. Love always lifts you up, even when you’re feeling down.
Be happy, be open, and be fearless because, let’s face it, you’re
worth it!
