Throughout your life, there are going to be so many songs that connect to a memory for you, and ones that you can relate to. Along with those songs will be songs that have a message you can take from it and utilize in your life. Here are some songs that I personally feel relate to college students and experiences.
"Young and Crazy" -Frankie Ballard
"I wanna sit out on the porch
Telling stories 'bout my glory days when I'm pushing eighty.
How am I ever gonna get to be old and wise
If I ain't ever young and crazy?"
You’re in college. Live for the moment and have fun. Go out, make friends, do questionable and silly things. Some day you’re going to have to go out and get a job; you’re not going to have these lifestyle freedoms forever, so take advantage of it and make memories that you can tell stories about when you’re older.
"Fight Song" -Rachel Platten
"And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me"
When nothing is going your way, whether it’s with friends, your classes, organizations you’re a part of, boys/girls, etc., you need to keep pushing through. If you feel that there is no one there for you, be there for yourself. Do it for yourself -- that’s what you’re in college for, right? To get a degree, make something out of your life, get some great experiences!
"Life is a Highway" –Rascal Flatts
"Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind"
It’s college: you’re going to have your ups and downs. You’re going to make some friends and lose some, make some awesome decisions and have loads of regrets… But that’s life. Go for the experiences, you never know when you’ll have the chance again. Live it up and make the best of everything handed to you.
"Drive" -Incubus
"Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there
With open arms and open eyes, yeah"
You’re going to make a lot of friends: class friends, party friends, dorm friends, and then those friends who you couldn’t imagine doing anything without- your college best friends. They will be there with you no matter what, right by your side, throughout your questionable, highly regrettable decisions, and 99% of the time they will be doing them with you… that or they will be there to talk about it the next day (or that night through a text, call, or FaceTime) and support you no matter what. Always be there for your friends, and they will always be there for you; it’s a two-way street, you get what you give. This song also plays into fear in one's life. Do not let your fears control you, try to overcome them and be stronger.
"All Night Longer" -Sammy Adams
"A couple rounds going down like water
I wanna go all night longer
Cause I do this every night
I wanna do this every night"
It’s unrealistic to say that you will not attend at least one party throughout your college career. It is also somewhat unrealistic that one may go through their entire college career without drinking (this includes once you turn 21). Now, while I in no way condone drinking excessively, there might be a night where you have the option to call it quits early on, or, as my boy Sammy likes to say "go all night longer." If this is the case, GO FOR IT -- you never know what could happen, or what amazing stories could come of it.
"What’s My Age Again?" –Blink 182
"My friends say I should act my age
What’s my age again?"
Being the child (yet still somewhat functional adult) of my friend group, I feel that this song perfectly captures a college experience. In college, yeah you have to be mature and attend your classes, do your work, get a job/internship, and what not, but you also need to have fun. That being said, do silly things, have fun, go on adventures, take advantage of the experiences handed to you, and make the best of everything. Be childish -- embrace your inner child, because when you do that is usually when you have the time of your life and make some awesome memories.
"I Lived" -OneRepublic
"I owned every second that this world could give
I saw so many places, the things that I did
With every broken bone, I swear I lived"
When you’re walking across the stage at graduation reminiscing about everything you did throughout your 4 to 5 years of college, don’t you want to feel like you had an amazing time, instead of standing there thinking, “What if?” for so many things? If you want to do something, go for it. Make memories and cherish the experiences. You’re definitely going to remember the night that you sat in a fraternity’s living room after a party with a frozen steak (as an ice-pack) on your knee with your friends who had to take you to Urgent Care the next morning, because you lived it up the night before. Forget about all of those “What If?”s and go out and live it up. I'd personally rather have memories and regrets than sit around thinking "What If?"
Keep these lyrics in mind. Go out there, and be the best you can be. Take advantage of your college years.
