I remember always having a book when I was younger. In elementary school, I actually got my book taken away from me at recess because my teacher was concerned that I wasn't being social enough. Recess was quite boring that day ... I had friends but they were all playing kickball and it was quite hot. The following day I brought my book to recess, but I made sure to sit out of that teacher's path.
Books have always been like an old friend to me. I don't know if this makes any sense, but when I have a book in my hands I just feel safe. Plus, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book. Or even a bad book, really, ... It sucks when you are reading a book that you have such high expectations for and it isn't that good. But you keep reading, hoping that it will get better but when you reach the end, you are left feeling super disappointed. No ragrets. (Not even a letter) ...as the Millers would say.
As I have matured and become more busy, the time that I have allotted for reading has significantly decreased. I prioritize other things, like sleep and hanging out with friends ... and sleep.
This past year I have come to the realization that I need to make reading a priority. For one, I miss it. I miss escaping to places and falling in love with characters. Reading helps me feel less stressed and helps me clear my head. Reading also gives me a chance to learn and experience and understand things that I wouldn't necessarily get the chance to understand normally. It gives me the opportunity to go on undercover missions, and take down bad guys. Plus, there are so many different things I can read.
I have not made reading a priority, yet I have also not stopped purchasing books that I find interesting. I honestly might have a problem because I have so many books queued right now and I am not ever able to talk myself out of buying a book. I guess there are worse problems, right?
I felt the need to write this because I feel like it is not uncommon for us, especially me, to push off things. I tend to tell myself I can't read if I'm not doing my homework or I will feel super bad if I have other things to do but in reality, the time that I am spending just sitting there wanting to read but not reading and also not doing my homework could just be spent reading. Reading is good for you. Taking time to do things for yourself is also good for you.
So, if you read this and are thinking, "what the heck is she rambling on about," I'll sum it up for ya. Allot time for yourself and don't feel guilty about it. In order to be full-functioning people, we have to do the things that keep us sane.
Feel free to recommend a book or ask me for a recommendation! I highly suggest the Harry Potter series.
