Some Of The Things I Miss About NC

As with many of the students who attend Howard, my actual home is somewhere else and as much as I like to say DC is my home, my home is in North Carolina. I’ve been away at college for three and a half years now and I still find myself getting homesick. This week was especially hard for some reason so I'm dedicating this article to my home, my boo North Carolina.

Drives through the country

When boredom strikes on a Saturday I love jumping in the car with my friend and cruising through the country. There's something gratifying about riding around on a full tank of gas with nowhere to go enjoying being young black and free.

#GHOE!!!

GHOE or The Greatest Homecoming on Earth takes place at NCAT every year. Even though I'm about to be a proud Howard Alum I'm biased I don't care. There is no homecoming like GHOE. If you’ve never been you are sleep and yes I will be attending this year.

DUKE! DUKE! DUKE!

There’s nothing like basketball season in NC the rivalry between Duke and UNC is crazy. Although I'm a believer I go hard for my blue Devils. What is a Tarheel?

The Waffle House

That moment when you go back to DC and can't get your scrambled cheese eggs from the waffle house so you have to settle for IFLOP.

The Eno

One of my favorite places to go back home is to the Eno. 1. I always get the chance to be one with nature 2. I've made a lot of important life changing decisions at the Eno 3. It's my secret quiet space away from life.

Lighthouses

One thing that still amazes me about NC are the gorgeous lighthouses. My favorite is Cape Hatteras it's literally free for you to go up and look.

“If lighthouse becomes a burning candle, flickered upon ocean's insanity.Your sailing heart there anchors to handle the obsessed breeze towards sand dune's vanity.”

Myrtle Beach

Say what you want about Myrtle beach but it's the most fun you’ll ever have with your friends during the summer. Everybody and their mama from NC and SC has gone to Myrtle beach. Get your best friends, a ratchet hotel, pack up the car and go. Even though it's technically in SC we still claim it. I'm really sad I didn't get to go this summer.

People with manners

When I came to DC I was instantly turned off by the rude people and every day I find myself becoming one of them. It's not that NC doesn’t have rude people but there's nothing like Southern Hospitality.

102 Jamz

One of my favorite radio stations back home is 102 Jamz. I'm so excited to graduate just so I can ride in the car with my mom listening to the 3 live crew in the morning and Toshmakia at night like old times.

Dogwoods

DC has Cherry Blossoms and Durham has Dogwoods. There's nothing that says "I'm home" like the smell of fishy trees.

MY FRAMILY!!!!!

The best thing about being home is definitely being around the people who love me and hold me down. I can't wait to graduate and spend real time with my friends and family.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
