Questions And Comments I Get About My VERY Curly Hair
Casey Koenig

My most prominent feature is definitely my extraordinarily curly hair. It is the first thing people notice about me. This very silly picture of me with a Five Guys milkshake shows my curliness pretty well. My hair is certainly unique, and a lot of people are curious or fascinated by it. I get a lot of questions and general statements about it all the time. Here are a few of the very common ones.

Have you ever straightened your hair?

Yes, I have, but I could probably count on one hand the amount of times I’ve had it straight in my life. It takes a long time to do, and I think that my hair is too thin to be straight, so it doesn’t look good to me. I do have to say, I like the way it feels when it's touching my neck. If you ever saw me with straight hair you probably wouldn’t recognize me because I look like a completely different person.

You should straighten your hair!

See previous response.

Have you ever tried to grow your hair out?

I’ve been trying for 19 years now, this not-very-long length it is right now seems to be as long as it's going to get. I didn’t have any hair until the age of three, and after I finally got some, it became quite apparent that it was going to grow very slowly. I’m still waiting for it to hit my shoulders. Maybe in another 19 years?

I LOVE your hair!

Thanks!!

Can I touch it?

Sure, go for it. It’s a lot of fun to play with. I do it all the time. BOING!

Can I have your hair?

I mean…I would give it to you if it wasn’t impossible…have fun dealing with hair that constantly gets knotty and can’t be styled unless it’s wet or brushed or combed ever. Well…I would day that on a bad day. On a good day I would probably just smile and laugh.

I like your hair better straight.

Please don’t speak to me ever again.

Is that your real hair?

Yeah…why wouldn’t it be? How would I be able to make it look like this every single day?

You should grow your hair out.

We’ve been over this.

Where do you get your hair from?

Honestly, it beats me. My mom’s hair is curly but not as curly as this. Maybe it’s from my dad…he did used to have an afro; I’m not sure if it was super curly or not though. He might have just made it that way on his own.

Do you like your hair?

Yes. Well, usually. It depends on the day. Sometimes when it’s one gigantic knot or frizzing like crazy in the humidity, I hate it. Most days though, I do like it. It’s become a part of who I am. I just wouldn’t be the same without it.

I could go on with the different questions and comments that I receive about my hair, but I would be here writing all day.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
