Forever is a word that is said so often, yet more often than not, a forever is only temporary. In this generation, we tend to throw around the words "love" and "forever" like they are just words without meaning, rather than words we should only use sparingly and with a lot of intent for a long period of time. Forever is a word that no longer fulfills its true meaning in my eyes, because some forevers are shorter with people that you would think.
Life is an ever-changing path, meaning those whom you associate yourself with today can be different tomorrow. Nothing tends to be guaranteed or predictable in life, and neither are the words people say. Verbal forevers are just promises that can easily changed, as nothing is less permanent than words in the air rather than a written commitment. Words make sound beautiful and intricate once heard, but can surely break your heart as fast as it uplifted it.
Forevers are not just with ones that you are most intimate with, but it can be a long friendship, a family member, or even a beloved pet. Although the love and feelings are still there, the meaning behind forever is not. The hardest part of forever is truly accepting that your time stuck in this fake forever is now up, and when it is time to move on to the rest of your life.
Acceptance of the end of a temporary forever is hard because many of us are used to the cyclical ways of life, and not so used to saying an easy goodbye. Every goodbye is hard, but the worst ones are the people you promised "forever" to, such as your significant other or who was supposed to be your lifelong friend.
Nothing that is so memorable is ever easy to say goodbye to, especially when it's a different kind of forever: the one where you tear up inside not knowing when the next time you will see them, if you ever see them. The end of forever also ends up in different places, whether it be the afterlife (if there is any), across the country, or to never be seen again in who knows where.
Accepting the temporary forever as gone is the bane of many people's existence, but is a necessary step in moving forward. The forever may not last forever, but what you decide to do after a forever walks out of your door lasts for the rest of your life. Don't let somebody's promise of forever keep you from creating a new forever with yourself.
