Some Cultures Are Better Than Others

Why western Civilization is the most forward thinking and progressive to this date

Some Cultures Are Better Than Others
Nicholas Bagshawe

Whenever I take the time and think about the morality of different cultures, the west stands above the rest. To begin western civilization is overall the most moral of the all the major cultures in the world for a multitude of reasons such as the west is more accepting of different cultures and religions than anywhere else in the world; the west does not condone actions that are clearly immoral such as rape, pedophilia and murder. The west also does more humanitarian aid and charity work than any other major culture. To make things clear the definition of a western civilization is any country that has been influenced directly by the modern culture of Western Europe and North America, this includes countries such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and any other country that has adopted modern western culture.

Since the beginning of the Colonial era western civilizations have tried to assimilate different cultures to western ideals. For many years it was very common in Indian culture to cremate a women, who was still alive, with her deceased husband. The practice was outlawed by the British General Sir Charles Napier who, even after Hindu priests tried to justify the practice by explaining it was part of their culture, said "Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs." While it may have been part of Hindu culture burning a women alive because her husband died is wrong, in a case like this I would say that it was a good thing to stop the practice even if it was part of their culture.

The idea that all cultures are equal is absolutely ludicrous, if burning women alive just because their husband died is an important part of your culture you are just proving the point that western culture has the moral high ground. Many will be quick to say that's just an example from a bygone era! The world has gotten better!” sadly they would be mistaken. A very recent example comes from soldiers deployed to Afghanistan who noticed an Afghan tradition called Bacha Bazi where young boys are forced to dress like a girl and have sex with Afghani men, even more shocking is the large number of offenders who are in the Afghani military and police force. I don't care that Bacha Bazi is part of their culture, raping children is wrong.

Western civilization is far from perfect, but even with all the flaws the west has proven to be the most open, free, and tolerant of all the major cultures in human history. If something similar to the Paris attacks happened in ages past Muslims would be persecuted, or simply executed. In modern western civilization acts of violence like the attacks in Paris, Brussels and the very recent attack in Orlando have truly shown how tolerant the west is, even though there is plenty of outrage, there are almost no acts of violence being carried out by the victims. Simply put the west is the best.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
