Some Advice To My Past Self

Hey Eighteen year old Skyler!

Look, I understand that you just took a big step in your life; making the decision to move out of your parents house. Working at both Wal-Mart and that Steak and Shake down the block wasn't working out so you made the right choice.

Dude, you got a ton to look forward to, trust. I know you're scared; believe me moving to the other side of the country on your own is quite the trip and it's not something that can be easily accomplished, but if you put your best foot forward; you'll make it and you'll have achievements to be proud of. Just in case time is circular like in Arrival (spoiler alert) here's some things that'll help you out in your time at the new school

First things first:

Don't eat at Lapo for more than two times a week. Once you hit the magical three, you'll be sitting on the toilet begging the gods up above to smite you so that you no longer have to feel the bowel pains. Red or Green is a thing out there. Just choose green don't question it.

Second:

Do things for yourself. Independence was learned later on in life, and it turned life for the better. Being independent is important because ultimately you have to depend on your own will and determination. Sometimes you can depend on people to complete tasks for you, but that "sometimes" cannot be all the time. You fell through this hole before many times with close friends who are no longer there. Which is maybe why you've built a harda*s impenetrable shell.

Third:

For the first two years of college all you did was go to class, play video games, sleep, rinse and repeat. It's ok because it's what you've always known. Playing Call of Duty and World of Warcraft in high school really left a mark on you, but you have to venture out. Let's be real, you didn't even know the school had a Student Union Building till the end of your second semester. All it took was for one of your gamer buddies to invite you to a game night on the second floor of the SUB. At the cafeteria section where there was once a Saggios (I'll never understand why WisePies took it over).

Fourth:

Diversify and expand your mind. For a while you were very close-minded, you didn't let other people's oppinions influence your own and that's cool. But you can't be so "one minded." I know this counteracts independence, and believe me; you'll come to find out that most theories and quandries in life counter each other out and nothing makes sense and you might as well hide under a rock and cry. Don't cry, it's ok. Just take a deep breath, you'll be ok. Mom, please hold me.

Fifth:

Understand that for some reason; there will be people around you who will view you as the scum on the bottom of their shoes. They will look down on you for either your race, social status, what have you. But you cannot let them break you down. Apparently you missed the seminar about the hierarchy system of college. You know, the same system that gets played in high school but with young adults.

You're here to change the game; matter a fact keep missing that seminar.

Best to you my past self.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
