It's that time of the year again. We as Greeks get ridiculously dressed up for socials, but which themes are actually the best? The worst?
The first thing that comes to mind when a sorority girl hears the word “social” is, “OMG I wonder what the theme will be?” While they are known for being awkward, especially soberly, they have become a great excuse to play dress up with friends on a random Wednesday night. However, while some of the themes are great, some of them have been done one too many times. Let’s be honest, you can only wear 80’s workout attire so much before you actually feel like you are Workout Barbie, and while Gerard Butler looks amazing in a toga, wrapping a sheet around your body is not something most desire to say they’ve done.
When going to a social, feeling comfortable in your outfit plays a huge role in how the night will end up. Seeing as though girls show up sober, while the boys are having a good ole’ time, it is important that the theme of the event is something people look forward to dressing up as. Just as Kaley McNulty said, “Liking the theme gets me excited to dress up and have fun with all of my sisters.” The theme greatly effects the outcome of members at the social.
One of the most anticipated themes is Risky Business. How can you not want to just go out in a huge shirt, shades and sneakers and call it a day? This theme, while it is seen often, will never go out of style. It not only looks good, it feels good. Plus, you get to feel comfy and cute all at the same time.
Another great theme would have to be high school stereotypes. Whether you want to go the gangster route, the nerd crew or the school athlete, dressing up as a clique with all of your friends will never get old.
Unfortunately, the 80’s workout theme will just never seem to give up. While it was fun the first time you got to wear your leotard and bright tights, as you do it the third time you realize how boring of a theme it actually is. With every girl looking the same, and every guy looking the same wearing a sweatband and cutoff shirt, this theme is bound to get old fast.
Now back to Gerard Butler. It is easy to look good in a toga when you look like that, especially since that toga is not made out of a pillowcase you purchased at Walmart the day of. Before coming in, we all probably thought of a toga party when we imagined what socials and events would be like, but the theme is better left to the imagination. While the theme in theory would be fun, the stress of figuring out your dress, aka pillowcase, and gold accessories is not worth the end result.
The last theme that needs to be booted out is CEO's and Office Hoes. Honestly, the name itself is reason enough for the theme to go. While the guys get to dress all nice and snazzy, the girls are expected to present themselves as what the name entails, trashy. Yes, the guys probably love it, but this theme sets the night up for a huge mess of awkwardness and floating eyeballs.
In the end, each social is whatever you make it. Even if you get stuck with an awful theme, you never know where the night might lead you to, or even whom it might lead you to.
