Social Media Is The Most Annoying Thing Ever... But I Still Love It
Tracy Le Blanc

Social media is both a blessing, and a curse. It allows you to stay connected with friends and family that you might not get to see as often, or at all. It also provides networking chances, such as advertising businesses or putting out requests for people to get you in touch with someone that could help you out. Social media platforms have engrained themselves in every day life and seems almost absurd to not have any kind of social media account.

Social media is also disastrous. It's annoying and it's addicting.

For starters, have you ever heard of the philosophical thought "if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" A version of that thought could be applied to social media; if you didn't post about it on Facebook, did it really happen? People have become obsessed with posting every thought and every detail of their lives on the internet. I have seen people post statuses about how they just ate a banana or how they are about to go take a nap. People do realize that it is possible to do those things without letting the world know, right?

While we're on the topic of people being too transparent on social media, nothing drives me crazier than when people put their personal details out there. I've seen so many people post long and detailed statuses about break-ups, fights that they've had with their family or significant other, financial problems that they are having, stories about people they've slept with, and the list goes on and on. These are all things that you shouldn't want people to know about you. You make yourself and the people you love look dumb by broadcasting your information like that.

I wouldn't say that I am a "grammar nazi", because, honestly, I'm not the most grammatically correct person in the world. However, I am convinced that 75% of the people on Facebook and Twitter are just downright illiterate. I know that's a bold statement to make. I realize that posting a tweet isn't like writing an academic essay and no one is being graded. But the way that some people talk....I can only assume that they don't know even the basic rules of punctuation or spelling. Social media is notorious for creating abbreviations for words, but when you abbreviate every single word or use the letters "s" and "z" interchangeably...you look illiterate.

I think the most disheartening thing that I've seen social media cause is people deducing their self-worth to the number of likes they get on a post. It is like they need the validation of a bunch of (sometimes) strangers in order to feel good about themselves. They'll constantly compare the amount of likes they got on something to the amount of likes someone else got. It's so unhealthy.

Social media is that one thing that people like to hate, including me. It annoys me to no end and I can't tell you how many times I've seen something on one of the platforms that upset me. But have I made an effort to delete any of my accounts? .....No. It's addicting, what can I say?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
