Why Social Media Sucks

The news you read can tell a lot about the person you are.

Why Social Media Sucks

We live in a millennial generation, where print newspaper has been forgotten, and watching television news is uncommon. Instead, this generation spends more time on social media platforms where they can simply scroll down a news feed in the palm of their hands. Just today, as I was scrolling down Facebook's trending topics, I was entirely disgusted with the news that was presented: "Gigi Hadid: Model Photographed Wearing White Caped Coat With Beige Shirt in California" In case you didn't get that -- the number one trending topic was concerning a model wearing a white coat and a beige shirt.

News that seems to be reported, is nowhere near issues regarding such things like the Syrian refugee crisis, or the fact that in just one week over 100 innocent people were murdered by terrorist attacks. In this millennial generation, the attention, power, and influence social media has is incredible. However, it seems as if the only stories making the trending news on social media platforms, are everything but relevant.

Rather than shedding light on the 12 million Syrians who fled their homes because of the plagued violence caused by ISIS and the sadistic power of Bashar al-Assad, social media instead brings attention to most superficial stories that deserve absolutely no attention. Reports regarding Gigi Hadid's apparel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's

lip sync battle, Tyga and Kylie's relationship status, Sofia Vergara's wedding planning, Charlie Sheen's perpetual commentary, and Gwen Stefani's fling with Blake Shelton have no significance or usefulness whatsoever.

The problem with social media is it reflects exactly what our world has turned into, and what we often times prioritize. We live in a world where supermodels are of more relevance than children who have no other option than to leave their homes and face the risk of becoming ill, malnourished, abused, exploited, or killed. Celebrities are recognized far more than victims of recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut, and trivial things have taken over all of our lives.

Just because social media platforms choose to report petty information, it doesn't mean that it's information deserving of our attention. We must learn to participate in the news that is relevant. If we continue to focus on what Gigi Hadid is wearing, how are we supposed to solve actual problems occurring in our world?

Think about what news matters to you, and how it can reflect the person you are. The news trending shouldn't be about shallow occurrences, rather, it should be about news that'll help us focus on things that are truly important.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
