I recently watched the movie "Ready Player One," directed by Steven Spielberg, and it made me think a lot about our obsession with social media.
If you want some background on the movie you can read a review of it here.
We often check our phones so much that they have begun to control our lives and become part of our reality. However, we must remember that social media is NOT reality. The only reality we have is the present moment.
Don't get me wrong, it is great to stay connected with people. But it is important not to take what we see on our feed and stories for face value. We must remember that we are all humans and no one ever has it all together.
Social media is not reality because it distracts us from what is actually happening around us.
We are living 3D lives on a 2D screen. That, my friends, is an insane downgrade. Instead of talking to people around us, we sit with others and scroll on our phones. What's the point in even being with real people then? Screens are taking priority over human interaction.
A photographer, Erik Pickersgill, edited his collection of everyday people by photoshopping cell-phones out. The Results are astonishing and really show the power cell phones have over us and our relationships.
Finally, social media is NOT reality because our worth is not in likes or comments.
Our worth is in existing, nothing can take that away. There is no one who is better or worse. We are all fundamentally the same. Followers and likes can never define us, even if we think they do. We do not need the world's approval to live a good life. To be fully alive is to be fully present and to invest in those around us. So let's take our virtual reality glasses off and start really living in this 3D world.
